Looks like the wood under the buttplate could be walnut. Not sure though. Pull the action and barrel. If it is dark like the butt it is a good bet it is. The screw holes look like light wood though. Puzzling. Is the butt plate metal?
The receiver looks like it might be anodized. Serial number prefix?

I think the screw holes exposed a dead give-away. birch/beech it appears to me.

The wood of the under the barrle isn't as dark. I didn't say what the buttplate or serial number prefix was to see if someone could ID the wood itself and not "date" it and tell me what it should be. When I bought it, I was hoping it was walnut, but once I got it home and took a good look at it, I figured it was birch/beech. BTW the buttplate is plastic and the serial number is 122-36xxx (around 81-82 per Rugers list)

sand a little bit of the but and sniff. Walnut has a distinctive odor.

"Scratch and sniff the butt" I think I'll pass birch sounds good enough. It should make a nice refinish project in a couple of months, when I get time. Thanks

Looks like it has some good grain in it. Should turn out to be a nice looking piece. Good luck with it. Post pics of it when along the way.
