Lefty Question

Log in to see fewer ads
I hope this isn't a repost but I've not been here for a number of years. I'm a lefty and I've owned a 10/22 but found that shooting it always led to blowback from the gun. I've never experienced that with the Marlin or Savage. I really want a 10/22 but I don't want to be burnt up every time I shoot it. I thought about ordering a deflector like those found on the older Remingtons and putting it on the 10/22 receiver. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, how did you remedy it?

Thanks in advance.....22_Plinker

22 Plinker, I'm a lefty and I've never had the problem from a 10/22, so I don't know how to help you. Yesterday, in fact, I was shooting a 10/22 prone with my body at a right-slant to the rifle, which should make me most likely to have a problem and I didn't. Are you right-eye dominant by chance or is there something else different in your stance (or my stance?) I shoot off my left shoulder and I'm left-eye dominant.

Some ammo spits more than others so trying a different ammo may help. A different stock profile may help or a higher cheek position such as with a red dot or scope. I don't like deflectors but I shoot right handed so guns like the 552 I had didn't really excite me especially the time my left thumb got wacked by the op handle. I can't imagine why a Marlin would not spit as much as a 10/22. Maybe a stiffer spring or heavier bolt handle would help your gun spit less as long as it still functions with your ammo.

Thanks for all of the input. Not sure what my issue is. I just know that This doesn't happen with the Marlin or Savage. Thanks again for the input.

Lefty here as well and don’t get any blowback or spent cartridges hitting my head.

Try shooting an AR left handed....

Well I've decided to give it another go. I picked up a 10/22 with the grey/black laminate Mannlicher stock.

Good Luck.
I am a lefty also and have been shooting two Ruger 10/22's and one Marlin 60.
I have not experienced debris or ejected shells blowback in any way.
Mostly shoot CCI, Remington, and Federal ammo in that order.

Nope, never had such a thing happen in many years of LH shooting of 10/22s. I've not had a squib but I have seen some, they throw all the gas back through the ejection port when the barrel is blocked. So if I felt anything weird like gas blowback from the port, my first thought would to check for a squib.

I'm starting to think that it was something with the older rifle I had. I took the new on out today and didn't have any issues. I'm glad since this is a beautiful 10/22. I wanted to get one to modify but this one is to nice for that...lol. Thanks for all of the feedback.
