2013 action coating?

Log in to see fewer ads
The Anschutz 2013 action has some kind of plating/coating on the action...

I was wondering if there is any reports out there that this has started to flake of the action?

I understand that the first ones where just blued, but added a coating later.. Why?

You're not getting much help here, which may be telling. I don't know why they coated later versions.

I bought mine because it was a novelty and I liked the way it looked, not for any accuracy advantage.

I bought mine used, probably ten years old, and had it a few years and nary a problem...Tom

I think Anschutz has created some ambiguity with regard to the finish on some receivers.

The 2013 receiver is currently described by Anschutz as being "nickel plated". I don't know if they have changed over time. Here is a picture from Anschutz. Whether it looks nickel plated is not clear as Thomasconnor's 2013 looks "shinier".

Anschutz also has had the 54.30 receiver in different finishes, with some sources suggesting that the newest versions have what is variously called a blued nitride finish or a black nitride finish.

There is also a 54.30 receiver with a finish called "Nitrate" on the Nordic Marksman website.

The receiver on my 54.30 BR50 rifle has a somewhat similar finish, but no one would mistake it for being shiny.

There are or were 54.30 receivers that were shinier, like nickel (and similar to Thomasconnor's). This may have been on very early models that marked the introduction of the model to the market.

It would appear that the finish has changed over time.

Regarding the OP's question about the durability of the finish, I can only report that mine is in excellent condition.

2013 "Plated Finish"

I currently have two (2) early 2013 MK 1 receivers in my possession and they are both "Plated" with what I would call Hard Chrome? We have had crank shaft pins hard chromed and ground concentric and to size, This plating process produced a surface harder than the parent material and adhered very well. The only time it would "flake" was when subjected to concentrated impact. I have noticed the Anschutz plating failing on some "corner" areas where it may have been impacted? I think the difference in shiney or mat appearance is the condition of the metal surface before plating...Only my .02 worth
