I have been shooting this round for 5 months. I use them for shooting rock chucks. I use an air rife under 70 yards. If I have some that are staying out of range then I use the 17 HMR.
The 20 gr bullets do NOT open up past about 100 yards. I have shot a large number of Chucks from 100 to 175 yards. On lung shots they just smoke right on through. The exit is the same diameter as the entrance. The chucks I have shot under 100 yards the bullets have blown up and they stay inside the animal.
The 20 gr are so accurate that I will continue to use them, but wanted to make a report of what I have been seeing.

A member here reported that beyond 80ish yards the XTP moreless stopped expanding , so sounds like you have very similar results .
I like them for predator calling but overall the v-max is tough to beat .
Thanks for the info. good shooting on the chucks I remember seeing quite a few in S central ID. .

With the hm2 at 160 yards the Vmax will not expand. I think the hmr is not really a humane 200 yard cartridge. It may hit but I doubt it will expand at that distance. I've used the xtp on ground squirrels and never had any problems but I prefer the vmax in 17hmr also for all around use to maybe 150 yards. Flatter shooting and more explosive than the 20s. rc

I have a Marlin 917VS that is very accurate with the 17 gr v max load and I found it to be deadly out to around 150 yards on prairie dogs and jack rabbits. The gun will not shoot 20 gr bullets very well at all. I recently purchased a 17 HMR barrel for my G2 Contender rifle and have found it does not care for 17 gr anything but shoots the 20 gr very well. I have not shot anything but paper with it. All the dogs are gone. When the weather cools some so the jackrabbits are’t hiding deep in what shade they can find I’ll take it hunting and get an idea of it’s capabilities. For some reason I can find only 17 gr ammo locally so it will be mail order for my ammo.
