John, most golfers can't leave their ego at home. was in the 5000yd range, now in the 5400. exercise, education, practice and science matters. by all accounts as we age skills diminish. as i said above all matters, not much difference between target and golf. miles of golf has a very good analysis of which tees, science matters. marty

This concept is not new- just the algorithm to support the concept. Look into the work of Pete and Alice Dye- and some of their associates- some 40 years ago. Alice was a tireless supporter of persuading people to play the correct set of tees for their ability and thus strive for “regulation” golf- and for building golf courses with tees to facilitate this. I can assure you the conclusions 30-40 years ago were very data driven.

Unfortunately the business side of golf found that you can’t “legislate” what constitutes “fun” to their paying customers. In reality- for a list of reasons as long as your arm- most players don’t care.

Most of the time the pros are hitting driver/8 iron on par 4's. Not much fun if you're hitting driver/5 wood.

That's easy to solve- just move up. I've never seen a golf course discourage someone from wanting to play shorter tees. I think that's underlying theme of the article above. Find the tees that are right for you. If as an operator though I force you to play those shorter tees against your will because supposedly it will be more "fun" you may not be too happy.

BTW I'd venture to say a tour player 8 iron is a 175-185 club. Not much different than many middle handicap 5 woods. They play a completely different game.

We moved up years ago. One thing about playing back you can't reach trouble off the tee, have to play short of trouble around the greens, can chip up all the time and shoot fairly decent scores.

I lost a silver 3.5#ish female looking steelhead/rainbow yesterday @ a perfect 64˚. This evening everything is plastered white @ 28˚F.

All I could see was someone walking with a backpack and a golfer scratching his butt.

there's a kid just short of the rocks fishing, the fella golfing is Merle, a 2 tour Viet Nam Vet who got me started in golf a little more than 3 years ago. Merle is 1 tough bird, both lungs partially removed and a few fingers missing, besides he likes to go target shooting. Merle keeps on getting along and I like it, good friend......ma
