Silas, I use shears. I simply cut all 4 feet off and then cut the tail off EXTREMELY close to the back . when you are skinning one if you cut the tail off close it gives you a dandy hole in the hide to grip on and pull the hide off . Anyhow after cutting the tail and feet off I cut the squirrel across the back and this is important as you dont want loose hair on your squirrel. using your breath blow the loose hair off the squirrel where you snipped through it on the back , put your fingers in there and pull in opposite directions , the hide if you snipped it correctly will pull off of the head or off of the rear legs. most likely the rear legs, pull the other side over the shoulders to the neck and snip the neck off. gut him with the scissors. I'm not kidding you we used to have skinning contests when I was a kid I have done it in 35 seconds or so and I am sure I can do it in under 60 seconds now, but it is starting to hurt my fingers pretty good. No hair on him and no guts in him. I skin them where they fell and put them in a pillow case and then put them in my vest. when I get my limit I then quarter the already skinned squirrels up and leave everything else in the woods. I get a liver, 4 legs, and a back off of each squirrel. Oh, yeah the pillow case is great for not only carrying your squirrels but it gives you something to wipe your hands on.

I like to cut from the tail cut, around the waist, all the way to where the back hair transitions to belly hair.

Sometimes it is like skinning a radial tire and that's when the pliers really pay off. Ya gotta be careful that all you grab with the pliers is the hide. I've gotten a hold of the belly skin by accident and ripped a big messy hole in the squirrel.

It's been a good while since I last used a knife. I really like the Fiskars “Cuts and More” scissors.

Silas, how do you get the liver if you don't gut them? I assume you cut the back out and get it from there?

I don't like liver so that's a non-issue for me.

I am not eating any squirrel guts or brains. Preference is to atomize their brains with the bullet, guts go to scavengers. If I'm in my woods, the outside cats here eat anything but the hide.

Possums and buzzards gotta eat too, same as the worm. Shameless Outlaw Josey Wales paraphrase.

Phil, I love their livers. I used to know an older Greek gentleman that paid me 50 cents for small livers and 75cents for large ones. He always said they were his caviar! So as to avoid confusing some others, that's American money!

FNNLC is called to order. My birthday was Wednesday and Mrs. Reb surprised me with a new possible USR. A CZ 457 in 22 long rifle. Preliminary testing indicates it is a keeper.

I played with it some today at thirty yards. I shot seven or eight groups and all were under a dime and most well under a dime except the group I shot with federal hunter match. It does not like that ammo. I shot rws hvhp, wolf match target, winchester 45 grain m22 subsonics, cci mini mag hps and the federal hunter match. It liked the rws, wolf and mini mags and was ok with the winchester stuff.
