S/S Bolt Cheap Ammo Challenge (new)

Log in to see fewer ads
This is meant to be a continuation of the original Cheap Ammo Challenge started by Tony Mig.

The rules are the same, only the availability of cheap ammo has changed. DANG, it's hard to come by, sometimes... but we do want folks to shoot ...and to have FUN

Since Tony has been away for a while, Vincent has graciously allowed us to re-start this game, to which I personally have some affinity.,,, Long about the time I got back into shooting deliberately (as opposed to casual plinking) THIS game was what caught my attention and opened up a fun way to find out how well my brand new rifle would shoot, and what ammo might do better than others - something we all need to find out with a new firearm.

This one has been a lot of fun for me, and I want to continue in the same spirit that made this enjoyable for all you stick-shift shooters out there!

Here's a link to the old game: https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...d.php?t=226224

We have plenty of difficult games, so I'm going to make this one easy....

This game will require that you shoot cheap bulk type ammo, and leave the high priced designer ammo in the box.....

The Rules....
1. Any SuperStock Bolt Action compliant rifle, any optics up to 36X, No Lazer devices.

2. Sandbags, rolled up beach towel, factory rest, whatever you like to shoot from with the only exception being a Ransome Rest, or any other type that locks the rifle into a perminant possition.

3. All targets will be shot with 4 - 4 round groups, plus 4 measuring shots that must be clearly sepperate from the groups. All 4 groups and measuring shots MUST be on the same card, and shot at the same time, on the same day.

4. All target submissions must be current, and shot for this game, in other words, no digging up old targets and submitting them for approval.

There will be two catagories for qualification....and scoring will be on an average of all 4 groups.......

Catagory #1 - must be shot from 50 yards with a total average not to exceed .750" (3/4")
Catagory #2 - must be shot from 25 yards with a total average not to exceed .500" (1/2")

Now comes the tricky part......

You must shoot cheap bulk grade ammo.....the cheaper, the better......anything you can find for $20.00 per brick or less....(this rule will be modified as the price of ammo is very unstable, and constantly increasing)

Here's a list of some to give you an idea for which the spirit of this game is intended.......

All ammunition has been chosen based on the current retail price per 50 round count from the following sources....Champion Shooters, Midway USA, and Natchez Shooter's Supply

The "NO" list
Includes but is not limited too.....
Anything from SK, Wolf, RWS, Lapua, CCI...(with the obvious exception of Blazers), all Fiocchi not listed above, Aquila Golden Eagle's, Super Maximum, all Eley and Remington-Eley not listed above, PMC Match Pistol or Match Rifle, and anything from the Federal Gold Metal line.

All target submissions MUST include the ammo used, if you have a cheap grade of ammo not listed, please include the fair market value of that ammo when submitting your target. If you are not sure, ask first before shooting the game. This does not allow those who happen to find a premium grade of ammo being sold at a gun show, or remotely located gun shop for bargin prices, to use that ammo in this game. Remember the "SPIRIT" of this game is to use bulk grade ammo, there are plenty of other games here where you can use the premium grade Ammo...just not here....!

Scoring your targets.....

Using standard calipers and standard measurements...(no metrics please)....include the size of each measuring shot, and the total average used for subtraction. Include the outside to outside measurement of all 4 groups with the subtractor, and the total center to center measurement. Then add all 4 groups, divide by 4, and include your group average. Scan or photograph your target, then up load it to any one of the free photo hosting sites in a size reasonable for use on a message board....(640 X 800), then link it to your post. You may also include any other information concerning the conditions, what you had to do to your rifle to get it to shoot the cheap stuff, the fact that it was your wife's birthday, but you went shooting anyway.....etc...etc.....
Software programs such as "ontarget" or any others like it are not to be used for measuring targets for this game. Digital or dial calipers are the only accepted form of measurements allowed.
You may enter this Challenge as many times as you like with different rifles, and you may enter the same rifle as many times as you like, but each entry must be shot with a different brand and/or type of ammo.

New Twist added......
The "RE-SHOOT" rule.......if you are not happy with, or feel you can do better on any one of your entries, then you may shoot it again with the same type of ammo. When submitting the re-shot target you must indicate on that target that it is a re-shoot. I will change your original score to reflect the new & improved score and place (RS) next to it to indicate that it was a re-shot score. For those with limited access to the ammo on the list here, this will give you continued oppertunities to keep shooting in the Cheap Ammo Challenge.

Now grab that box of junk ammo, and go have some fun........

Look at that cyclone target! Take the flyer out of group 1 and 4, and those would have tiny. Shot a 21 on a tackdriver target too. I'll be posting it next. Love the Mueller so far.

Thanks for moving my post Cow, not sure how I f'd that up. Love the Mueller so far. It is the 8-32 also. I ordered it for my 10/22, but later the same day I picked up the 540. I will probably get the APV next month for the 10/22. The 4-16 BSA Contender that is on it now is going to crap. When I first got it, it was fine, but the image quality is deteriorating. Anything over 8x is unusable now.
I only bought it because it was easy to pick-up on the way home with my new carbine, and I wanted to shoot it the next day, before I started my mods on it. Once I get another scope for the 10/22, I'll send it back.
As far as where I found all the ammo, I got the Aguila from Midway a couple months ago, the fiocchi at a LGS, and the GB and CCI by hawking Bi-Mart for about 6 months. The box of cyclones has been kicking around here for about 10 years.

Here's a pic of the new scope on the gun.

I played in this game back when Tony was running it. I wonder if any of you fellows that played back then remember this post:

https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...postcount=1780

and happened to have saved the picture. This photo was/is a great tool to keep you out of trouble with your wife or girlfriend.

Anyway, I've been wanting to go back and pick up some of the old ammo I had and try to qualify some more targets to have a little fun and get rid of some of the 1 and 2 box lots of cheap stuff I have. The more challenging of the ammo I have is Rem GB and Federal 750 bulk. I never got the 750 to qualify anywhere with any of the guns I was using back then. I still have it and using it up on the CAC would be the best use of it I can think of.

If any of you have the photo, please post it here for us. It is a HUGE pile of empty .22 cartridge boxes and I'm not just talking big, I'm talking HUGE.

ETA: I went back and looked over the postings and see I did qualify RGB with the 541S. I don't remember much about it, but I know that I used up more RGB trying to qualify it than any other ammo including the 750 bulk. I just got fed up with the 750 and put it back on the shelf. I can use it on skunks and armadillos and such at close range, but it ain't for precision.

Target Standard.....(not to be confused with Target)
Can somebody post a photo of a box of Remington "Target Standard" so I can be sure I know which is legal in this game?

Would this be the legal stuff?

and this be the stuff that isn't allowed in the game:
