Better than a knife or a gun left in the truck when you need it.

Here are some weights of loaded guns. All will fit in a front pocket but the Glock is a little bulky. The Shield is on the heavy side for a single stack but carries very well. A Ruger EC9 would probably be lighter.
Ruger LCR 22lr 8 rounds 16 oz.
Ruger SR22 11 rounds 19.5 oz.
Sig P238 380 8 rounds 19 oz.
S&W Shield 9mm 8 rounds 24.5 oz.
Glock 26 9mm 12 rounds 26.5 oz. Has a plus mag base.
If I had to have the lightest possible gun I would go with the Keltec P32. 9.5 oz loaded and I would use fmj.

A .22 will terminate an assailant. The question is how long does it take and what happens in the interval. No one wants to be shot so having a gun in any caliber may be a deterrence. If the assailant isn't open to reason, I'd go with 9mm or better.

Its all personal preference. I have tried several options.
And its all what you feel most comfortable with.
Larger guns are great, tried a bunch / just not much fun to lug around all the time.

Last 4 yrs Glock 42 r front pocket. 13 oz / 17 oz. 7+1 / W MagGuts follower.
With an extra 7 in the watch pocket. (Tiny magazine's)
Easy to shoot well, runs 100%...Under 1" thick / Looks like a cell phone.
The 42 works well In an inexpensive kydex pocket holster.
Lots of great options out there these days. SIG 365 is selling like hot cakes....
Prior to the 42 my pocket gun was a S&W I purchased in 1994.
15 oz 442 Air weight in satin nickel. Holds 5 / .38 sp.
Modern .380 ammo pushed me into the G42.
The G43 / Sig 365 is a bit too large for my pockets.

Was worried yrs ago about the 75 rounds to qualify with the 442.
But was surprised how well it did. Shooting under a fan.

I think I have the best of both worlds, a Full Conceal Glock 19 gen 4 with a 24rd mag in my left pocke & a NAA 22lr 1-1/8" barrel with the folding grip & laser in my watch pocket. No holster hassle, I cant even tell they're there & no one else can either but can flip open either one handed.
I have a concel vest I could put 2 CZ=09s or 75s & the Walter PPK in the small on my back & be all set.

My biggest is a BFR 450 Marlin & 45/70 10" barrel SS, several Ruger $$mags in SS & blue most Ruger but some Taurus. I wish I could post a pic of the 10" BFR & the 1.25" NAA both SS. I also have a 50ae Desert Eagle I've never fired. One of my favorite is a 44 Special Charter Arms old style Bulldog with the bobbed hammer & sandwiched frame, very light pocket gun with a big hole in the barrel. Only had to pull it once.

My observation of human nature is that bucking conventional wisdom usually comes off a bad idea that fritters away time and money. Self defense seems a foolish place to develop a new formula, and a .22 is cutting corners. In the heat of an assault, all but a lethal shot from a .22 could go unnoticed by the assailant. How lethal, or incapacitating, is that first shot going to be?

One thing for sure, I wish I could shoot my 9's as accurately as I can my Browning Buckmark UDX 22lr, though that Buckmark is hardly CC material.

Conventional wisdom had the world as a flat object at one time, and conventional wisdom had tomatoes as poisonous. You would be surprised at how many shots is takes to incapacitate someone with a 9mm, 40 s&w, 45acp, you would also be surprised that a 22 lr is right there with a 45 acp, probably because you can shoot one more accurately because of less recoil.
