A couple of Questions about 550-1

Log in to see fewer ads
Hello All,
New to the forum and I must say there is a wealth of info here. I purchased a 550-1 today stamped C X X Does this mean April 1951 or do I date year by the second letter since there is a space between the X's. Also do I need to find a weaver n3 base or is there enough steel to drill and tap top of receiver. Some advice on the best mount would be great.
Good Day Thank You

Wow I was hoping out of 69 views someone would chime in. Did I start off on the wrong foot somehow. I could sure use some help to get my sons 1st rifle fit with the right weaver base other than the n3 style. before Christmas.
Thanks

Not on the wrong foot if you start with the model 550-1. Welcome to the forum.

Many of these have been tapped on top of the receiver for Weaver mounts. #15's if I recall correctly, but call Weaver to be sure. A vintage Weaver "N" side mount works well too, these can be found on ebay and GunBroker.

Ensure a qualified Gunsmith does it though. I have seen many botched jobs.

CXX = April 1951

Don't be a stranger, let us know how it shoots.
