After 25 years, I feel like it's time to upgrade the firing pin and extractor on my old 10/22. What brands would be on the top of your list to create the most reliable gun possible?
My new Custom Shop Ruger 10/22 would not extract at all straight from the box.
Ordered the Volquartsen firing pin/extractor combo and never had to look back.
The Volquartsen combo is the real deal and never fails to perform. :t
Fortunately I have never worn out a Ruger or Browning extractor but I did have to replace a broken extractor on a Ruger Mark I pistol just before selling it.
Got it from Numrich so it may have been OEM.
I have heard that Tactical Solutions makes a good extractor for Ruger and Browning but I hear more recommendations for Volq and Kidd.
I've used a few aftermarket extractors but my OEMs typically work fine, even in a Bentz chamber. There are probably situations such as aftermarket barrels with tighter chambers that may require a more refined part but if it works, why fix it.
You having issues? If you get an aftermarket firing pin, save some before and after strikes for comparison.
Kidd's have worked fine for me but if I'm just changing the extractor on an OEM bolt then I usually stick with VQ extractors. Every single one of my 10/22's has either a Kidd or VQ extractor. As far as the firing pin I've never had a problem with the OEM one. But if you do need to replace it I would imagine any one of them will be fine.
I usually buy extra parts from Kidd, when I’m ordering a barrel or trigger. Therefore I use Kidd parts the most. Not because they are better but because I just add them to the order.
If you send the gun to CPC for their tune-up, he has a $10 option for a tool steel custom fit extractor. With these, the extractor is custom fit to the particular gun. WELL worth the measly $10.
