Okay, here you go. The definitive answer to the question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Or at least, 'Does it matter which way I install the c-clip on my mainspring?'
Don't judge me to hard, this was a spur of the moment video done at one o'clock in the morning Also, should have uploaded in in HD, but that was taking to long for just past midnight and I still have three triggers to do...
So it is what it is. If you want I can upload it in HD later.
Also should have added that the fix for this is smoothing off the rounded end of the hammer strut. Making it more pointed is better than making it more round, but it's best to follow the diameter of the original end as much as possible.
O K, as I understand what is being said, 'it doesn't matter which way the bottom go's as long as the head gets polished' ?? WOW, that statement could really be twisted all kinda ways~~ok~~ok, all sarcasm aside, I firmly agree with the video. It is most important that all contact and friction points be free of ANY roughness! The little hammer strut is a stamped part and the head is often overlooked in the assembly process. I make a point of polishing all such parts in all of my firearms. Doe's make for smoother operation!!! :bthumb:
Good suggestions, I'll try and get some good pictures of each and post them up.
It's only an issue on less than 2% of all rifles, so I wouldn't say I'm going to polish all of them from here out... Most of them function just fine. What you WILL notice more often is just a hesitation in the hammer, like something is hanging up, even if it still technically functions. That can be either from this problem, or sometimes when they stamp the rear of the strut it's kind of sloppy, and tappers out instead of making a nice square corner. The c-clip then gets wedged onto the strut, and doesn't want to move. You can usually tell that's the problem because the hesitation is at the beginning of the motion rather than in the middle.
That was just a totally random aside... I'll try and get those pictures up later.
Lol, bulletnose, even in my sleep deprived state I almost put up a note saying, 'And Chaser, no comments about rough head!' Yeah, this thread is full of those...
BwaHaHa...I had a girl friend way back that.....naaaa....
Excellent Vid...and you KNOW ol' you-know-who will be along soon...upside down right side up it just don't matter guy......this and the FP pining just gets his panties all sucked up his pookus.
Hell Chaser, with a personal invitation how can I refuse? You did all but throw the gauntlet down.
Brimstone did a first rate job on the video. And the issue he presents is addressed and answered clearly.
However, this discussion started with the claim the a hammer failing to reset can be corrected by installing the hammer strut/spring assembly with the C-clip's opening facing up. It is THAT claim I question.
Please note Brimstone does not even mention this issue in his video.
Rather he relates the position of said C-clip to the problem of the end of the hammer strut catching on the hammer's fulcrum point when worked slowly by hand. He states that the trigger group in hand is from a brand new rifle. The sticking he shows, or attempts to, is seemingly resolved simply by his hand cycling of the hammer and hammer strut. (@2:30)
He also states (@2:44 - 2:54) that the position of the C-clip is NOT the cause of the problem addressed in his video.
If I may ask, just what was proven in this video and how?
.this and the FP pining just gets his panties all sucked up his pookus.
And just why is it that my questing something seems to get your panties so sucked up in yours??? I do hope they're lace, BTW.
I never have been afraid to say that the Emperor has no cloths.
My offer still stands. If you have a trigger group that will not reset do to position of the hammer strut, I want to buy your rifle. I'll swap you a brand new rifle and handle all the transfers if you want. Even throw in a complete action job in the pot.
I really do want to thank you for the video. If I understand correctly the best thing to do is to polish the hammer strut head but if for some reason the hammer strut head is not polished the next best thing to do is to make sure that the hammer strut is installed with the open side of the "C" clip on top? I just do the latter because I'm lazy I guess and having the meaty side of the "C" clip on the bottom for support works for me and makes sense. I think what's most important here is that you have recognized the problem and made a great effort to suggest a working remedy. I thank you for that. Seems like discussing this subject in the past has always opened a can of worms. Hopefully your post will open some eyes and help many people. Thanks again.....Lonnie
Not gunna one up anybody...but, I go a step further and smooth the entire strut and then polish the entire thing...but you know me and polishing :bthumb:
Crap! I remember a little line in one of the hammers on one of my 2 10/22s. But which one? Since I old and forgetfull, I guess that is just something else I'll have to forget. I think I turned the open part up on both of them. Will tomorrow never come?
Mine works fine either way. I tried this in my newer housing and my older metal housing and it made no difference. Still can hurt to polish up anything that has friction. Good video!
Glad I took a look at this thread. I got my trigger back from Brimstone a few weeks ago. I was messing with it before reinstalling and the mainspring fell out. I reinstalled it and took the rifle to the range and put about 100 rds thru it for the first time with no problems. But after taking a look at the video I decided I should check it out because I remembered the mainspring had fallen out when I got my trigger group back. Sure enough I had it in the wrong way. It probably would have caused problems in the future if I had not caught my mistake by opening this thread up. Thanks again to Brimstone. Having my first 10/22 only for a short while, this forum is loaded with all the info I need to become more familiar with my rifle.
