Back in the late '50s and just after I'd gotten my license, I worked part time for a home delivery milk business, which included ice for "ice boxes". In the years to come, my parents often referred to refrigerators as "ice boxes" and I catch myself doing the same from time to time. At least those in their 70s know what I'm talking about.

"That dog won't hunt."
One thing I know, if the words 'Like' and 'So' were stricken from the language we would be verbally paralyzed for weeks.

Actually heard on TV the other day someone use: hissy fit

Not heard that one in a month of Sundays, so maybe it was my once in a blue moon occurrence.

That one's pretty much still used methinks, along with "Dial the number" and "Hang up."

Haven't heard anyone say "Drop a dime on him" recently though.

Maybe because "Stool Pigeons" have gone the way of the Passenger Pigeon?

The terms 'carpetbagger' and 'scalawag' had about the worst possible connotations imaginable when I was growing up, but you don't hear them used much anymore even tho their meanings have not changed, in relations to a person's character.

A 'plug' of tobacco, which was a volumetric measurement.
--

Watching a cowpoke hand roll & lick a cigarette from a pouch of Bull Durham kept in a shirt pocket w/a mother of pearl snap button onit w/one hand, while horseback.

'Who wears the spurs around here anyway?'
--

'Whot kinda outfit is this anyway?'
--

'All hat & no cattle'
--

'lickety-split', like yesterday!
--

'rick' that today has become a cord.. for those that don't know the dif.
--

'groovy'
--

'wake it up' = coon az for 'test'; may still be in use down there, I dunno.
--

'whot wazzit that dad said when he hit his thumb w/a hammer?'

Oh, that's still in common use, izzit?
--

I should fix a restorative and behave, eh? But as Jack has pointed out, its the moon beams and tonight, they are cold filtered.

'Hamm's, from the land of sky blue waters.'

Bamboozling, ain't it.

Words I've used all my life are being replaced by longer/different words, I guess they sound more "Sophisticated" and "Enlightened" to some of us. Words like Blend, Mix, Combine and Include are now replaced with "Incorporate." I used to Buy things, now I "Purchase" them. I'm not Affected by anything, I'm "Impacted" now. It isn't me too any longer, now it's me "Also." The word Maybe is gone, replaced with "Perhaps." I'll speak and write as I always have but will probably need an interpreter in the future, for what used to be MY language!

Yeah, lotta $10 words going around where 50c ones will do.

When I was teaching I figured I was there to teach people, not impress (or confuse) them. Always broke things down into the most simple language that would get my point across.
