good beginning 22 mag bolt rifle?

Im not sure if this is really the right place to post this so someone can move it if necessary. My buddy is going to be buying a 22 mag bolt rifle in about 2 weeks and we are trying to figure out what to go with. I own a savage 93r17 FVSS in 17hmr and he really likes the synthetic stock. I think right now he is looking at the marlin version of the Savage FVSS. I think he wants the one with the carbon looking stock though. does anyone know much about this particular rifle, or is there a better one in this price range (450 max) he needs a scope too so any suggestions on a combo sort of deal?? I love my savage but he doesnt want to get the same as me, plus we need something to compete over....thanks for your input.

Your friend may be a little dissapointed when competing with your .17HMR. After shooting my Anschutz 22mag, the 17 seems so superior, the flat trajectory and 3 to 500fps velocity increase is night and day to me. The 17 has a huge following because of this (& it's newer).
If you could find one on sale (I saw them at $429) I like this rifle http://www.savagearms.com/93btvs.htm
I wish you were local, I'd sell my anschutz for $450, you could come to the range & try it.
