That brings to mind some of the differences in the John Wayne and Jeff Bridges versions of True Grit. After Wayne's frantic ride Mattie makes a miraculous recovery and is her usual bubbly self. After Bridges' desperate journey, Mattie is lucky to lose only an arm.

Out of 100 tries I get 1 or 2 passable photos. That's above par for the course.
when I'm out mapping or photographing the out doors I always have one or two of these with me. Those GPS APPs draw lots of current.

When we used to ride, I always wore a helmet. And not the plastic imitation helmet that is so prevalent with the Harley riders, but a bonafide DOT approved skull bucket. My wife, not so much. As soon as we were knees in the breeze, she'd take off her helmet and place it in her lap. Mandatory helmet State's or free States didn't matter. You can lead a rebel spirit to water, but you'll probably get kicked in the gonads.

Their eyes really glow in the shooting light on the IL sighted scope.

Yeah, the Finn will send numerous pix of the same subject with little editing sometimes.

Talked to bud for 20 min. this a.m. and attached a snoozing doe pic to him a new way since the reg. Mac/Thunderbird email attachment no worky with his phone.
The 8 pt one of his sons shot was a minor flesh wound on the top of its back, according to trail camera pix of it coming back to the bait several times since getting the minor flesh wound.
Bud's youngest son is also bugging his dad to get a crossbow. He says he doesn't want one. I said you need one!! Like pounding sand up a tiger's heiny as dad used to say.

A Soldier died today.

A Poem Worth Reading

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbours
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Soldier died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A SOLDIER DIED TODAY."

I think this one works for either today or Memorial Day. Eric Bogle is a great song writer,

Tell him to come to the deep woods feeder, shooting lane and stand in Edgecombe Co., NC. Plenty of corn to eat.

Great Veterans' Day ceremony.

Now go get that deer.

No small turkeys in the bins so I got the butcher to look for the smallest they had in the back, 10#. This year I got one with arms n legs.
Free large deluxe pizza, vet day bonus, plus a $5 gift card from my fave lady checker. She was ticked with the new slower than molasses kid, not handicapped like some they hire, , and was even opening bags and tossing em towards him while shooting stink eyes during a busy afternoon. Kid had no clue he was dealing with a ticked off 50ish woman, or worse yet didn't care.
I asked if it was too soon to tip the new kid and she growled, "Oh Gawd yes!!" I gave her my paper change while still coming out a bit ahead because of the gift card.
The woman manager, that told me which pizzas were free, was nearby monitoring the new kid and making sure the checker didn't unload on him.
I love that store.
