I guess it varies depending on where you live. I have no problem finding HMR in local stores. A lot of them don't even carry HM2 around here.

17 mach 2 will be mighty slim pickings when the current stock runs out. The chances they do another run on it in a while is slim.

For whatever reason 17 hmr has beat out 2 out if 3 shortages and seems to be combating this one as well.

This has been chanted over and over again, and has yet to come to fruition. That being said HMR has a greater variety of projectiles available. My opinion on which rifle would be a 54 or 64 action Anschutz

Interesting thread. Ammo availability for most calibers has become volatile and unpredictable, including !7Mach and 17HMR. I have both and wnet thru that period awhile back where 17Mach2 was very hard to find. The 17HMR as generally been more available. Now I have trouble finding 17HMR for prices I like....oh well.
But, to our OP's questions....I recently pick up an Anschutz 1517 in excellent condition for $600 and put a scope on it that I had on hand. I plan to order a Tract scope for it, which will cost me $194. So if you look and scour the internet, you can find a really nice set up for under $1000. So buy the best gun you can find. You'll be glad you did. And stick with the 17HMR; the ammo is usually readily available and in numerous configurations. The worst aspect of the 17Mach2 ammo is it is quirky. Invariably, I can shoot 10 shot groups at 50 yds wiith 8 of them making a ragged group about the size of a dime and 2 flyers well outsie of that circle. To me that means I'll miss 20% of the squirrel eyes I shoot at if I do my part. Of course, I don't always hit them like I want to, but the point is it undermines my confidence in the rifle. Consequently, the 17Mach2 stays home.

Sir you stepped into a big one most on this site are going to say CZ, but a rifle is only as good as the shooter and the ammo you use. So pick out any thing that your eyes like. You might be a better shot with a gun then most but if not no matter how much you spend on a rifle won’t improve it.

For going purely hunting you'll be happy with it. The difference in "thwack " is perceptible.

I guess pretty much a grand for the rifle and scope combo.
I dont think I can use anything Olympic grade.
Hi from a fellow AO victim. I have a Tikka T1x in 17hmr and it is super accurate.

I'm having no luck finding a 17 caliber, guess I shouldn't be too surprised, considering all the crap going on right now....

Keep looking it will ease up. I agree with all here except the guy who said he liked "None". I have a .17 Mach IV center-fire custom Zustava. A .17 HMR Marlin custom bedded in a Boyds stock with a nice suppressor. A .17 Mach II 10/22 in a custom converted E.B.Brown conversion that contrary to popular belief does not blow up when you keep the chamber clean, and a converted Remington 581 in .17 MII. Also a converted Remington 580 in .17 WSM. They are all great and show an obsession I have with the caliber. As many will tell you they are all inherently accurate. My brother routinely takes Coyote with a Mach IV center-fire. The smaller .17's should not be used for game that big. The HM II is phenomenal on 75 yard black bird shots. Pinpoint laser trajectory on all of the .17's. They all do the same thing. When their distance is done they are done. They drop from the sky. They shoot flat to a given distance and run out of energy. Inside thier range they are magic. That's how I choose them for effectiveness on small rodents like ground hogs. Out to 75 yards all of them are awesome. 75 to 150 yards the HMR, WSM, and Mach IV. To 200 the WSM is still doing well and if I go further it is the Mach IV (but that's a 4000 fps center-fire). The HM II is quiet. The HMR and up get louder. The WSM is really cool, for a rimfire it is fast! The Center-fire is as loud as a .223 in my opinion. The suppressed , Marlin HMR is perfect for urban pest control and my favorite go to for pest control around the house. The sonic boom from the little bullet isn't much and in the Marlin Bolt gun it is pretty quiet.

As many said here choose it for what you want it to do. I think you will like them.

I'm leaning toward a 17 HM2, mostly because of cheaper ammo.
I don't have any interest in a 17 CF.

The cheapest 17HMR on ammoseek was $20 which is at least 25% higher than the normal high. No 17WSM found on AS. 17WSM is the preferred ammo for vermin.

Good luck with what ails you from the agent orange Merle. Every year they add new infirmities for disability $$ to it for those who do not know.
