R106 Sentinel crane replacement tips??

Log in to see fewer ads
Hello
Just received a very nice overall condition R106 Sentinel in 4" Blue. But, something bothered me about it: the ejector star would collide with the frame before the cylinder pin made contact unless you pushed the cylinder forward.

On further examination (and luckily had a friend's R107 to use for comparison) I confirmed that the cylinder / forcing cone gap was WAY wide. His measured .004, my guns was an EASY .012.

I removed the cylinder and found the culprit: a bend in the crane where it meets the frame. Ever so slight, but this had the cylinder further to the rear of the gun (so star struck frame on closing) AND it held the crane a bit further back when closed ... you could see the daylight between the front of the crane and the frame Since it is the crane that locates the cylinder, that gap also had the cylinder too far back.

Long story short, I have ordered a replacement crane, but now I need to know HOW TO DISASSEMBLE the cylinder pin assembly to replace the crane.

I think there is a locating pin, visible on the ejector star (2 holes) but the schematic shows another pin securing the very tip of the cylinder pin, where it meets the frame on closing the cylinder.

SO, anybody know of a reference to further strip down the assembly, please share it. ALL of the online material skips over that part saying 'it can be cleaned without taking it apart', but I have to replace a part, so she needs to come unglued!

Thanks
Kevin

OOPS! I was working on my Citations last night too, so This is the R106 SENTINEL DELUXE, not the Citation

Pin 7112 is what you need to remove to disassemble the crane/cylinder assembly. The other pin 7117 is to precisely locate the ejector along with the ejector shaft when the match machined the ejector/cylinder assembly.

Well, got the replacement crane and was able to get all back together.

For those ever wanting to take the ejector assembly apart, a MUST HAVE tool i a 1/16th inch punch. The pin that holds the assembly together is accessible through the holes in the ejector 'star'. It is under spring pressure, so keep your fingers over the end of the cylinder when you push the pin out. It all comes apart once that single pin is removed.

REASSEMBLY takes a slave pin, which can be your 1/16" punch. Start by pushing the tip (Part 7575) into the ejector star (7580) and push the 1/16th inch punch through the aligned holes to capture the tip in the star. Adjust so that the punch does not extend into the interior of the center hole in the tip piece. THEN, with the rest of the assembly together, push the rod (7579) into the ejector star, align the hole in the rod with the hole in the tip and push the 1/16th punch all the way through. This captures the whole assembly, and the holes are lined up. Next, start to work the punch out, until the punch is about midway, which gives enough space to start the retainer pin. Once you have the pin started (7112) work the punch out a bit at a time while putting the pin further in. Standard 'slave pin' reassembly. Get 7112 to be flush in the rod, so it doesn't interfere with the ejector star, and you're good to go.

Thanks John for the tip on only 7112 holding it all together.
