I was just wondering if someone could give me some information on when this was made. The serial number is 3###L. It has checkered grip and stock with a round barrel.

Is the serial number only 4 digits? With that low a number it should have an octagon barrel, with a round barrel it should be above 32,000. Four digits world put it in the first year of production which is about 1938 (I still have not found a real definite date for the start of the 29-A's). Production dates for 29-A's seem at best a good guess.

Concerning the barrel, that's what I was thinking. Barrel swap or replacement maybe?

As far as I know it hasn't been altered, at least since I have been alive and I'm 47. I would post pictures but I don't know how or maybe I can't since I am a new member, or both lol. I don't see any serial numbers on the barrel but it says savage arms corporation, Utica NY

The serial numbers are in 3 places on the stock, behind the trigger guard and on the front of the receiver 30##.

Thanks for the information you provided. All I know about it is that he bought it new, perhaps he didn't like the octagon barrel because it was heavier and switched it out?
