Help Iím a green ear

Log in to see fewer ads
Just purchased my first 10/22. Carbine
1970-1980s era with very few shots on it.
I have purchased a BX- group drop in and have made a nylon bolt stopper.
2 piece weaver mounts that Iím going to bed on top of the slick action top.
I found a 4x32 Japan tasco on eBay a few weeks ago. ( sent the pos back) 1/21. Cheap weaver rings I lapped on the bedded weaver mounts.
So hereís my questions.
I want to keep the stock and barrel for now.
I do want to take the barrel band off and cut the narrow end of the stock off.
Iíve heard all kinds of stuff.
Bed the recoil lug.
Bed the barrel block.
Bed the first inch of the barrel.
Bed in pressure points.
Bed the barrel all the way down the stock.

????
Iíve seen electrical tape youtube barrel bands and weight.

What in the world? Is there not one or two common methods that we know will work?

Please help.
I want to paint the end of the stock black to look like a old sporter.

Wait , first shoot with band on, and then off. Sometimes it shoots better with the band.

Get a rail, dont bed? The rings to the receiver.

Try tape bedding first, to see where bedding works best.

No there isnt one known method.

Welcome to the money (and time) eating hole otherwise called the Ruger 10/22.
Btw, not so long ago I was you now. This is the place for all things 10/22. Be methodical in making one change at a time and retesting. Might take a few years.....or a lifetime with all the variables.
Btw, Im still having fun with mine doing so.

Just tape bedded for now.
Had a 4x scope on her today and was impressed with the groups after some minor tuning.
Iím excited to ammo tune with some new optics and see what itís capable of.

I shot a bunch with the stock steel bolt stop and the nylon bolt stop. Pretty impressive for softness and recoil felt.
The BX trigger group is really nice.

Had to rid of the barrel band.
Looks good to me! Cheers

First, I would not go cutting that stock. Looks too nice as it is.

Should you cut it, or (better) get a replacement carbine stock and cut it, then I'd say.... Shoot it and find out. If it is giving good groups then leave it alone. If you think it can do better, experiment with bedding. Instead of using epoxy, etc. I've become a fan of the aluminum tape method. Did one "temporarily" (got stock night before match) and it is still in place and doing fine many years later.

First picture is stock with barrel band. Second picture is it cut off and the end painted black like a old sporter rifle.
It tuned up pretty well tape bedding barrel in and sliding the limb savor weight up and down.
Cheers

Install the BX trigger, install the scope, shoot it and find out how well it shoots. That looks like a walnut stock so don't mess it up. Buy a cheap black plastic stock if that's what turns you on. You can get at least 100.00 for the walnut stock.
