17 mach 2 barrel

Who is currently making a drop in barrel in 17 mach 2 for my 10-22?

I'm thinking all I need is the barrel.

Not absolutely positive, but I believe you would also need a different/heavier bolt and guide rod spring. The .17HM2 is a pretty high pressure load compared to a .22LR. Otherwise timing is off for proper action.

thanks DB. I knew the heavy bolt and spring would match the higher pressure.

But seems like barrels for 10-22 in 17 mach 2 have dried up. thought that now that new decent ammo is available, there would be more interest.

As you may have read they were problematic at best.. some Gents that stuck with it and tuned/re-tuned had some luck but that is not the Norm... and those lucky/skilled Gents will tell you that you MUST keep the Chamber clean.


This one was tuned.. re-tuned and worked on/with for 6 months.. it went on a PD Shoot and after 50 rounds it went KABOOM... after the Kaboom all parts were sold off with disclaimer...

I do not know alot about the 10-22 Platform with Mach2..I do have a Marlin 717 Mach 2..I put a heavier recoil spring in it..So far I have never had a problem with modern ammo or a kaboom..I suppose the possibility is there..But I do not shoot it a whole lot..I keep it clean and rarely ever exceed a box of ammo through it..It is mostly relegated to just a collector piece for me, more than a daily shooter.

I also never run a liquid type lube in it..Only dry lube..Liquid oil is just asking for trouble in one of these in my opinion.In any rimfire, but especially the Mach2..

Right now it's just beyer barrels. Heavy handles are hard to come by.

Rumor is volquartsen will sell one to a guy with a toggle action, not positive they want the liability to sell one to convert.

don't know if anybody is currently making 17m2 barrels for the 10/22 ...you may find some older manufactured ones still available though...when choosing a barrel, keep it short, in order to avoid pressure issues. I have a 20" and two 16" and the empty casings from the 20" show more signs of pressure (firing pin hits blown back out) than the ones fired in the 16" barrels do

nope, you definitely want at least a heavy charging handle (power custom still has them).. a heavy Volquartsen 17M2 bolt would be even better... I like to run a magnum hammer spring and a non-radiused bolt too

and as mentioned you have to keep the action clean and dry lubed, and the chamber spotless

Given all those provisos and still no certainty that it will run reliably -- and safely -- it seems if you want a .17HM2, a bolt action is a much better idea.

How did that happen? Since the Ruger 10/22 does NOT have a slide/bolt dis-connector a out of battery firing can happen. Was round was not completely in chamber and blew out the bottom rim edge or was it coming out of the chamber with too high of pressure and blew the sides out? Did it only destroy the mag or was there more damage done?
Thanks for sharing as this 17Mach2 and17 HMR stuff does interests me as I have dug into some Ruger and Remington stories to learn more of why and what.

There are two ways I've found to do a 17hm2 conversion. Run a 10" barrel with heavy handle like a Charger or what have you. Still gets 2000fps. I also run a VQ bolt with a +10 spring with much success. Also to find barrels I've had good luck here and the bay. You'll need to be patient though.

You need to understand that these conversions are not for the faint of heart. Proceed with great caution and be aware the blow outs happen. They do not make these things you look for for a good reason.
