I have a MKIII 22/45 Lite and I am considering getting a MK II steel frame. I understand there can be a fit issue with the lug but other than that should the MKIII Lite barrel fit and operate in the MKII steel frame?

Maybe, but you won't know until you try.

There is a variability in how far the female part of the receiver was pounded in order to get a specific lower to fit.

Would this replace the MKIII 22/45 lower, or be in addition to it?

MKII frame in addition to the MKIII 22/45 frame initially. If I like the metal MKII frame better then it would be a replacement. I am aware of the male/female fitment may be different between frames. Jusr not sure if everything else mates up to operate.
