In used condition I would say 50-100 too high.

That would be a fair price if it was NIB. The rusty Kimber 82G at CMP was a better deal for $425.

make em an offer!

OOPS! I thought you said 'pawn' it was Gun shop:-(
If you like the looks of that rifle make them an offer, and always make your offer at a pawn shop "CASH OUT THE DOOR"!
Be sure you want to shell out what you are offering! Very few people even take a second look at a Target rifle in a pawn shop and they may have had it setting on the rack for a while?
I bought my 541X at a pawn shop in Ga. w/o sights and now have near that in mine after finding the sights and that dosen't count repairing and refinishing the stock which I did myself.
I now have four Kimbers left and I would not sell my 541 for what the one you are looking at is priced at.
[durn friends, God chillen and God-grandchillen grabbed three and now they's a Great Great God-Grand Child just born that I've got one hid back for:-)
But I still shoot that 541 more than my kimbers. I shoot the Kimbers at least a couple of them on a regular basis too, but I just like the 'Old" .22's and my 541 is a darn good shooter!
I forget now what sights 'Presidentg' has listed for the 541X but you can figure around 100.00 to 125.00 or even more if you also had to buy mounting blocks?
Yes the Kimbers are cheaper right now, but do you have a "classic Remington 541X, nearly complete and in good condition in your collection??

Remington only made just under 9000 541X rifles too. So there's not a lot of them around.

On the other hand, I like the sights better on the 82G and the receiver's grooved so you can mount a scope. Where the 541X isn't. So you can't mount a scope on the Remington unless you drill and tap it for scope mounts. Which you wouldn't want to do unless you don't care about keeping the rifle original. My 541X was a beater when I bought it cheap years ago so I went ahead and did a little customizing. Now it's the most accurate rifle I own. Even more so than my 82G at this point. But I'm happy to have both.

NIB Remington 541X

I apologize for raising this thread, but I'm curious what my NIB 541X (complete with sights) might be worth. I bought it about 20 years ago and never fired it. I have pulled it out of the safe and cleaned the bore a couple times. I once attached the sights and inserted the bolt to take a photo, then returned the parts to their bags and taped them closed.

I also have NIB Kimber 82G, NIB H&R M12. I don't believe the Mossberg M144 and M44 were NIB, but they certainly look like new. The M144 is the only one I've fired.

OEM sights are the Redfield 65 front (long out of production) and the Williams Target Foolproof (low) rear.

Any of the small format target sights will work on the oem base and any globe sight with standard ⅜" dovetail will fit on the front. In terms of current production sights, I'd go with the Lyman 20 MJT front and the Lyman 90 MJT rear.

My guess would be $500 to $600 to the right buyer if it is actually NIB. Keep in mind the 541X isn't in the same league as the 82G or the M-12.

Thanks. Guess I'll keep it since I paid $435 for it back in 2001.

I have no idea what that's supposed to mean other than the 541X must be a lower-value rifle or low-performance.

The Rem 541X was a Government idea of a lower end rifle for Youth Shooting. That's the reason for a rather inexpensive commercial rifle with a magazine, lower cost front and rear sights.
It wasn't designed to train Military personal but teenage youths in Gun Clubs, 4H.

The 500-600 NIB is about right for a knowledgeable payer.

I agree the Mossberg 44 and 144 are not new. But rifles that appear un-fired are un-fired after a Military rebuilt as almost all were re-built at various times and put into storage. The used appearing rifles were returns from Youth and Gun Clubs.

The Kimber 82G and the H&R M-12 are Match grade rifles like the Wichester 52 and the Remington 40X. The Remington 541X is a target rifle, but not in the same league as the Match grade rifles listed above.

Recently sold the Kimber. Time to move the Rem 541X and the H&R M12, too.

You may want to list it in the classified section of RFC.
