Priced a Green Mountain sporter and $169? Yikes! Guess I've been out of the barrel game for a while. I remember when $100 was the benchmark.

Does anyone make an inexpensive yet decent sporter barrel? Not in need of match-grade accuracy, but even takeoff barrels on Ebay are running $75.

Does Ruger sell new barrels? I like the 22" sporter without sights.

S&P Outfitters has take offs listed and 5% off with RFC code if they have what you want in stock. Good to do business with. They have a 22" tapered with sights for $85.

I have been looking at ultra light barrels and $200 is the starting price.

Cheap price means cheap quality so you get what you pay for.

Whistlepig Lightweight 22" (bull barrel, not a tapered). About 21-22 oz. A tapered 18.5 steel barrel is around 29 oz. On sale for $142.80 for the matte aluminum.

I have three of the Whistlepig barrels, couldn't be more pleased.

I was looking at those. With the threaded barrel it is $203 + shipping so $213.

they also have an aluminum tenon instead of stainless steel...which may not matter to you, but I find it disconcerting, so I stay away, even though I would like to have an octagonal barrel and they offer one

I did not mean to hijack this thread. It was just a casual remark but it appears I did.
I have a 10-22 in a QBD stock I originally set up for my wife. I bought a Tacsol SBX barrel and tried it on the QBD. 5lbs with a scope. I bought the SBX to use on a folder so now I need to replace it and she wants it to stay light. She was happy with the stock barrel until I put the SBX barrel in it to try out. Now I have to get another light weight barrel.

You really can't go wrong with a Kidd ULW.

I've got a 20" GM stainless sporter barrel setup in my tupperware (with barrel band) Ruger stock. A good while back, when heavily playing the "games" here a RFC, took it to the range and shot 5 groups of 5 that averaged less the .25" at 25 yards. Never did submit it to the 1/4" game, probably should have. I was so involved with the other games, I didn't think it important at the time. My bad. Yes, I can recommend the 20" GM Stainless Sporter Barrel. Other barrels have come and gone, still have this one!

I remember when $15 was the benchmark for a nice tender filet mignon...

The days of $15 filets and $100 barrels are long gone.
Cough up a few more bucks, have a nice cry or whine about it, and then go shootin'!
You'll soon forget the few extra dollars

!8" sporter contour. I have one of their stainless bulls, and it's been very good. If I were looking for a sporter on a budget, I'd try it.

OTOH, if I were looking for light and accurate, I'd buy a Kidd ULW. Liked my first one so much, I bought a second just like it.
