Colt / Walther 1911 - 11 Opinions

I've been looking or a GSG 1911 22 for over a year now and have had no luck. I bought one two years ago, liked it a lot but my son really wanted it so I gave it to him for his birthday.

For $279 it was a great gun to work on. Lots of accessories and almost 80% parts interchangeability with the stock Colt. Too bad, there are none available. I haven't given up hope all together but I still want a project gun in .22. I currently have three Ruger Mark IVs and a Mark III to play with so I want something else.

Has anyone tried the Walther/Colt 1911 22? It's $ 100 more than a GSG so I'm a little scheptical.

I have one of each. The Walther/Colt (phony pony) is easier to take down than the GSG.

Both are Zamex frame guns.

I found the phony pony is more reliable with a wider variety of ammo. The GSG definitely prefers mini-mags.

Which model pony, government or target? Mine is a target with fully adjustable rear sights. My GSG came with a "Novak" style rear site.

For equal money I would get the pony. For a C note, I might go for the GSG.

But you could recoup a $100 fairly quickly on ammo costs if you can shoot bulk ammo.

I like my Colt/Walther/Umarex enough to dress it up with VZ grips AzShooter. It's a hoot to shoot suppressed, dependable enough for steel challenge, and as Gator notes not ammo sensitive.

I've handled the GSG version but never shot one so I don't have any advice about relative value. I do see them on Gun Broker, here's one example https://www.gunbroker.com/item/912097368

I don't see where you'll go wrong with either gun.

Have fun!

I had just the conversion GSG upper I ran on this RIA Lower I put together..It worked great..I think it ran CCI SV fine too..

I sold it when I ran into this original Colt upper conversion..I also modified a spare barrel and chambered it to 17HM. Now with a quick barrel swap I can shoot both 22 and 17HM2..

I do use the GSG mags with my Colt upper...Better than the original Colts were.

Thanks everyone. Well, I missed the Colt so I'll wait until the Colt or GSG are available.

Thanks Webfoot. Another member put the same ones on his and I liked the look so much I copied it. A lot more "curb appeal" than the stock black rubber ones I think.

Well, I finally ordered one from Sportsman's Warehouse. It's the Government Model without adjustable sights. I'll shoot it that way but if I can't see them I'll get a set from Dawson Precision.

It only comes with one 12 round magazine. I found a source for more but at $40 each I'm going to get them over the next few months.

It showed up today and is a Gold Cup Trophy instead of the Government Model. I'm happy.

I'll be able to shoot it next week and give a review.
