Excuse my Ignorance

Good evening, fellas.

I'm brand new to this forum and to 10/22's in general.

I have not yet purchased a 10/22 (but plan to very soon). In fact, I have been perusing this forum regularly as a guest for the past month and have been gathering some great information; saving what appealed to me most in the vault as guides to modifying my own 22.

Here is where my question, and unfortunately ignorance, comes into play. My 'from scratch' craftsmanship is far outdone by my ability to modify an existing design. Is it feasible to purchase a factory stock off ebay for approx. $10-$25 and modify it to my liking?

Anything that I should be aware about or stay away from?

I don't know that you can find a stock for that price but you can do what you like with it. This is what I did to my factory stock... still a work in progress.

You can definitely find factory stocks around, keep your eyes on the trading post. I found a pair of used carbine stocks for a decent price once. I think the usual price is around 30 though.

What type of use do you anticipate for this rifle? Target or Hunting?

If target, at what ranges (distances)?

If you have lurked here for awhile, you are already aware how helpful and knowledgeable the membership is. If you let them know what you want to do with the rifle, the recommendations will follow.

This one will be mainly target with occasional varmint/small game hunting thrown into the mix.

Nothing crazy, but I'd like to consistently shoot this thing at 100-200 range.

The stock was just an original carbine wood stock. I cut the forend and the butt stock was done freehand. You can do whatever your imagination and talent allows you to do.

I rarely pay more than $15 for a take off stock at gunshows... now mind you I buy some pretty rough looking stocks.. they are out there. Ebay/any auction site I've not had as much luck with.

Prices on eBay can get out of hand but it never hurts to keep your eyes open. I'd been trying to pick up a used 10/22 wood stock to modify and expected to pay between $20-$25 but they kept selling for more than I was willing to pay, often in excess of $35. Then I saw an auction for 2 stocks, put in a bid and ended up getting two stocks for $46. Go figure.

Do a search for threads started by Hipshot, under advanced search to see what can be done to a factory stock. If you search through them you will see the jigs he uses to alter the the stock to receive the new forearm and buttstock.

I would say: get your new 10/22, enjoy it for a while, and then decide on any changes you might want to make...

I picked up a used stock and a barrel for $10 last summer. I just started my build and am almost done with the stock. They're really easy to trim and file and get cleaned up to fit you. I cut the barrel band off and thinned out the grip and stock. I'm doing woodstocks finish that you'll find here and it looks great.
