A question about differences in Model 74 springs.

I have a 1940 Model 74 and a 1951 Model 74. The 51 has the trigger spring with the hooks on the end. The 40 has a spring with the ends turned down at a 90 degree angle, no hook. It allows the spring to slide toward the butt. Has anyone got one like this?

Never seen a 74 trigger spring like you describe. My 1947 model has the same type as your 1951. Simple enough to get a replacement from Numrich or other vintage Winchester parts sources. Maybe a previous owner lost the original and tried to make a homemade replacement?

Thanks for the reply. I ordered a couple of new springs from Numrich because the spring in the 1951 seems weak. I compared the spring in the 1940 74 to the new spring. It is longer and much heavier than the new spring. The old spring looks like it is professionally made though. I have put one of the new springs in place.

Remember that the trigger spring does nothing but return the trigger to its forward position, and thus doesn't have to be very stiff. The trigger pull weight is much more influenced by the way the sear hook is cut/polished (it engages a relief notch in the firing pin itself) and the height/tension of the tiny sear spring pressing on the back of the sear.
