Vietnam Era SOG Knife

I served in Vietnam with MACVSOG as a recon Team Leader at CCS in 69/70 and was issued this SOG knife. It's serial #353 (plumb blade) and is unused. I carried a shorter navy survival knife in the field and brought this one back having never been on a belt or web gear. I gifted it to my Dad when I returned home. Several years ago he gave it back to me in the same cloth I wrapped it in to give it to him.

I've done a bit of research; talked with and met Ben Baker the original designer and overseer of the contract to make the only 3 batches of knives. I also talked with Gary Boyd who was the expert on SOG knives for Mike Silvey's book "Knives of the US Military in Vietnam". None of these guys had seen any earlier than mine. I'll be keeping it however!!

Hope this photo attachment thingy works!......thanks for looking, Mike

Nice blade. I carried a stag handled Bowie, for 2 years, my Father sent me. When I left Nam, in 1970, they wouldn't let me bring it back. Said the bone "could" contain disease. I always thought it was more that some Second Lt. R.E.M.F. wanted it for himself.
Where were you at? I was a Grunt with A 1/3 3Rd Mar Div. I spent all my time in 1 Corp, Quang Tri, Cam Lo, Dong Ha, Qua Viet, Khe Sana area, Mudders Ridge, Witches T*T, Vandergriff Arty Base,.................

Great looking SOG knife Mike. Glad your father kept it all those years and later gave it back to you. Thank you for your service.

Best regards
Martin
