The REALLY helpful hardware man

The hardware store closest to my home is owned and operated by a kindred spirit. When in need of screws/springs/pins, the corner True Value is the first of my go-to resources. I wondered yesterday as I searched the bin for a grip screw - as a rule, do most hardware stores stock gun screws, or am I just lucky to live near the exception?

I have not gone into all of the HW stores around and about here (but lived here 35ish years), maybe I should visit all.
None have stocked 'gun screws' afaik, but things change.
Imo, yer lucky.

There is an ACE here has that same drawer system but no gun screw drawers. This is a small town, only 5000 people and the city 20 miles away has a Menards and Lowes. Probably won't pay for them but I may ask if they can stock them.

Yes, you are a very lucky man to have gun screws at your local HW store.

I have never seen them at any HW store in S. Wis.

My local ACE Hardware store has an assortment of screws that may work for a gun, but none are listed as gun screws.

Real 'gunscrews' tend to be finer tpi and a better hardness than more common screws. Ime, A few guns use common tpi (Mossberg, for instance) for side scope mounts, etc., but generally if you lose a gun screw dont count on finding a replacement at a HW store.

Our Ace hardware carries the full assortment of gun screws as well. No gun taps though. Perhaps the longest screws run $1.89 most are under .90. A nice one block stroll to find what you need. If helps that they are a FFL dealer as well.

"Gun Taps" You're funny!

I have a True Value store in town that stocks all kinds of hardware, but no gun screws. There is a good LGS that does, though!

Word has it that in the "Olde Days", hardware stores used to sell ammunition.

I'd LOVE to be able to walk up to the barrel, and use the little garden trowel to scoop out 4 or 5 scoops of .22 and then weigh it for price.

Ace Hardware in my town sells ammo. Every farm and ranch hardware store I have ever been in sells ammo, most sell guns also.

If you remember scooping out the .22 ammo and weighing it, you are a heck of a lot older than I am , I'm almost 80 and never saw that.

Story is that in the western bar a drink is called 'a shot' because you could trade a cartridge for a drink.
Btw, I cant prove it..... If Roy's Western Bar was still in Fort Worth (I was there in '78?, long gone last time I was in town) Id give it a go....

Youíre one lucky dog JEC. Most of us have to wait days for a special order screw. The local gunsmiths donít stock hardware anymore.

Gun screws are specific. Most places do not have them. Their threads are specified to guns only as far as I know. I do know you cannot go to most places that sell taps and find a tap for a gun screw.
