Hello I'm a newbie on this exciting forum.
I just bought an old 39 A but I don't find his date of fabrication.
The serial number is P10040. If someone knows...
Thanks
The newer 39a are not near as good In my opinion. I do know they were having all sorts of issue. I just hope they have things worked out. In my opinion if you can find a older marlin without the pre safety cross bolt. The one with J. M. Stamped on the barrel are the most sought after.
I have a 39a and the prefix is h followed by 6830, so am I to assume it was built in 1951? The rifle has some pitting on the barrell, would this be better to leave alone, sometimes reblueing reduces value? I oil it often but the rust pitting still keeps on coming back.
Here's an odd one . I just purchased what is marked as a golden 39a . The previous owner inherited it from an uncle . In 95% condition . He said his uncle bought it in the 60s . The serial # starts with a XV . The X is a little off center from the rest of the # . There is no serial #s starting with X according to everything I've seen . If you ignore the X and go with the V , that would put the rifle at 1962 . That date would fit the background story .
Anybody have any thoughts/experience with a serial # with a X or XV prefix ?
I apologize if necro-posting is frowned upon here, but I have 2 cents to throw in (bill me ). I have a marlin 'original golden 39a' with serial 731224_ _ . A member of a different forum claimed this was a 1973 manufacture, as "some" of the 73s used the old date system, it was not a clean cutoff at 1972 as commonly noted. If anyone can confirm, perhaps the OP / sticky could have a small note added?
Just a suggestion, I know this would've saved me a lot of headache.
thanks

I'v got a fair inventory of .22s in my collection to include a JCPenny model 30 autoloader and a Winchester model 9422MR and 2 Winchester model 57 bolt guns but a 1947 vintage Marlin 39A mostly original is, I think, the best one of all. You know you can never have too many .22s. I've never had a 39A before, My dad had one but I wasn't into shooting at age 6-7 yet and you would likely all agree that that is a sweet lever gun. I have a question for you: the metal is all plum brown which is to be expected but the wood has a shiny finish on it. What are your views on stripping that glossy finish off (dunno if its original, but I don't think so as I've had a couple Marlin bolt gun 22s that shot lights out that had what appeared to be an oil finish.
Hello All. I am a new guy here and having a little problem trying to figure out the year my 39A was hatched. The first three numbers of the serial number is 681XXXXX. There isn't any letters in front of the S/N. Thanks for the help. I enjoy all of the information that is on the site.
I have a 1951 39a with the peanut, and was curious if there is an idea of how many were made each year?
