Green Mountain heavy taper ordered!

Log in to see fewer ads
I just ordered a 17” heavy taper sporter from Rimfire Sports and Customs for one of the Kingston Armory receivers I got a couple of weeks ago. That’s the last piece I needed for this build. I’m really looking forward to putting this together and seeing how it does.

Ruger laminated 10/22T stock or maybe an Altamont thumbhole .920 stock
Ruger BX trigger group
JWH competition bolt
JWH adjustable v block
UTG scope rail
Older Japan made Tasco 8-32x44 AO target dot scope.

I had everything but the receiver and barrel already in my parts stash.

you do have a good one planned

but you do know those heavy taper barrels are pretty easy to fit (with minor sanding of the barrel channel) into a stock that is set up for the factory sporter weight barrel, and that way you don't get a gap on both sides of the barrel because it was originally cut for a .920

I've been waiting for Altamont to get the KKC back in stock, so I can use a 19" GM HT that I have in my parts stash

I also have a carbine stock (with the barrel band) and an ATI folder I could use.

I really like that one. Mine will be blued though. Well a matte black receiver and blued barrel.
I do like that DSP stock! Sure do wish I had one for this build. Heck, I just may get one for it! S&P has them listed on their website........decisions, decisions!

The stainless one , no longer in my possession, is in a LVT stock, that Tex45lc gave me on PIF, for a build for my nephew and his kids. They were very happy this last weekend! The one in the plain 1159 stock is mine , and like Clemís, is an excellent shooter. Both stocks barrel channels had to be sanded out, the LVT a bit less , but still quit a bit, which surprised me .

So before you buy a DSP stock see how it sets up in your target stock, Iíll bet it looks awesome.

Hereís a few another GM barrel , 20 inch sporter, 22 inch Running Boar, And 28 inch bull, that you can think about.

Those are some sweet looking 10/22s.
I'm probably going to use the T stock I have, at least for now. Trying to do this build fairly cheaply.
When I get it put together and shoot it I will post up some pics.

The T /S is gonna work great. All my builds were done on the cheap too! I wait for the sales, scour eBay for deals, and wait until I can score a component cheaply. I got a KA receiver from S&P too, $80 how can you beat that , figured it would ad tome weight to the target gun. It’s silver receiver is on the stainlesss LVT above. Haven’t shot it yet , but thebolt runs smooth. Thank you Hornady One Shot.!

I bought the JWH bolt 4-5 years ago on sale (eBay) for $49 along with the v block for $12.
Got the BX trigger at my LGS about the same time for $50.
While I don't mind paying for good quality, I'm much like you on looking for bargains. It does pay to shop around and be patient.

On the same topic does anyone have experience with both the 17 and 19 inch heavy tapers? Is there a noticable difference in accuracy or are the difference mostly appearances? Thanks

I've built up 3 rifles with Compact stocks and the 17" HT barrels and one 19" HT on a DSP

I'd say they group about the same on any given day, with a very slight edge going to at least one of the 17's

but, I do like the 19" in full length stocks...the 17" can look a bit stubby in stocks with longer forends, but look great in something smaller like the Compact or a Carbine that has had the barrel band area shortened
