10/22 sniper clone build

I bought a Boyd's tactical 10/22 stock about 15 years ago on sale and recently decided to build it into a rifle. Here are the details.

Brownells railed receiver

JWH Custom bolt, extended charge handle and buffer

Ruger trigger with KIDD kit

Fedderson 16.25" tapered barrel with recessed crown

BSA Sweet 22 AO scope

Mueller 40mm 3" sunshade

Amazon medium height rings and El Cheapo bipod

It's sighted in at 50 yards and the AO with BDC gets me on target at 100 yards, at the scope's 75 yard setting, repeatably.

Now I need to work on ammo testing to shrink group sizes and gain consistency at 200 yards - shooting clays on the 200 yard berm was a crapshoot.

After about 150 rounds I'm happy, not ecstatic, not yet.

Put a pad under the bipod feet, like a kneeling pad for floors or gardening. And use a rear squeeze bag. And youíll see those groups shrink. A pressure pad under the barrel either right where the action climbs out of the stock , or 3 inches back from the muzzel. Aluminum tape bed the action. All these little things work.

Thatís a nice gun, and you should be ecstatic

Thanks! I'll test a few different ammo and work in a few of these suggestions along the way!

Thanks! I like the stock in the pic in your Truck Gun thread. 3-shot 50 yard groups were 1/2" to 3/4" but I was shooting 5-shot strings byt at least 1-2 out of every 5-shot string were flyers an inch away. Could have been me rushing the shot.

100 yard groups had same flyers, which if I discounted translated to about 2-1/2" group, but it was kinda windy. Shooting clays, and clay fragments, at 50 and 100 yards was no challenge if I did my part.

I'll look what I can find locally, and go through my ammo storage reserves. I probably have a few random boxes of 50 mixed makes

Shot a several different kinds of ammo last weekend and a clear preference was found, CCI 40gr Standard Velocity. Best/smallest groups consistently, with no flyers out of 50 rounds and 100% reliable cycling of the bolt.

Second best was Aguila 40gr HV, bought by mistake, was supposed to be SV.

Others tested
Federal Gold Match
Eley Target
Armscor
Winchester (3rd runner up believe it or not)
Remington Golden
Federal Champion
CCI mini mags

All shooting was don't prone, with a bipod at 50 yards on the NRA A-23 target.

The CCI and Aguila were then shot on the A-32 smaller target where the CCI shot tighter groups again so I sighted in with the CCI SV

I shot our club's rimfire prone match the next day and took second place with a 393-14x out of 400. The winner, the reigning club champion, shot a 395-21x

Hi

Can I ask what Bipod you did get.

I am new to guns and got given a 10/22 for a birthday present. I really want a bipod for it and have no idea which one to buy.

My gun is stock straight out of the shop (and they are great fun to shoot).

Thanks for any pointers

Paul

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum

I actually ditched the Amazon bipod, it was a POS lol I have a Harris bipod, 9-12" that I just move between rifles vs leaving it attached.

The bipod(s) I have attach to a sling swivel. The Ruger factory stock on a 10/22 doesn't have one. My rifle is in a Boyd's tactical stock which has 2 forward sling swivels.

You can either add a sling swivel to your stock, put your 10/22 in a different stock or not use a bipod and shoot off a bag, or rest. There are probably other choices too lol

Good luck and have fun!
