I'm going to my first NRL22 match tomorrow,,,
Not to shoot but to spectate while a friend shoots.

This is probably not a sport I'm going to get into,,,
From what I hear there's a lot of crouching and moving about.

Something my now 69-year old body finds a bit,,,
Challenging.

But I'll be there to watch and cheer on my friend.

He is a younger man of 26 years old,,,
An Engineering student at my university lab,,,
Doing the same student worker job I started with 20 years ago.

He shoots a Ruger Precision Rifle with some model of Vortex scope,,,
And he's shot in quite a few matches so he has experience.

The weather is supposed to be cloudy and dry,,,
Rain isn't expected until late evening.

So I'll pack my camp chair and a small cooler of bottled water,,,
Stop at Mickey-Dee's for a bag of sausage biscuits,,,
Then be at the range by 8:00 AM to spectate.

Should be a nice enjoyable morning for me.

Sounds like fun .
I used to shoot CMP Sporter 3-position matches . They'd allow us old guys to get into position, but we couldn't shoot until the first shot was fired by others getting into position.
I've lately thought I'd like to shoot a NRL22 match , but me being 69 also , don't think I could do the getting up and down either .

It would be good for your joints ,bones and muscle tone assuming you are still in decent health.

Even if for no better reason that’s to participate.
In short order if you practice you would be surprised how fast you would be able to do it..
You have to practice every couple of days though.

I have been shooting NRL22 for 2 seasons, I'm 69 also(closer to 70). Shot base class first year, and now shoot Old Guns, but haven't modified the course of fire as allowed for that class, yet.

Depends on your physical being whether the COF is too demanding.

Why not give it a try. COF for upcoming shoots are posted on the NRL22 website the last week of the month. You can download and try out the stages to verify what you can and can't do.

As mentioned, Old Guns meet before the match start and agree on what the "group" wants modified with the match director. The example listed by NRL22 for accommodation includes shooting off the bench!

The up and down wasn't as bad as I anticipated,,,

The up and down wasn't as bad as I anticipated,,,
I was assuming it would be some sort of "Run-n-Gun" scenario.

I am 69 years old but am still mobile,,,
In that I don't need a cane yet.

I believe I can do the course of fire with no problems.

There were 21 people total in the match,,,
Over half of them were shooting the Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR).

I saw three Bergara rifles and two Vudoo rifles,,,
It was surprising to me that I only saw one Ruger 10/22,,,
What was even more surprising was that is wasn't very tricked out at all.

There's an old cowboy adage that states,,,
Buy a $50 horse but a $500 saddle.

One shooter exemplified that by using a Remington 541-T,,,
But with a Vortex scope that looked like it would cost more than my car. ;)

So my friend who I went to watch and his two shooting buddies,,,
Have talked me into giving the next month's match a try.

I don't have a scoped & mag-fed bolt-action rifle,,,
That is up to the quality level of the rifles these people had.

But I do have a CZ-512 Semi-auto that is a scary precise shooter,,,
It now has a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4-12x40 scope mounted on it.

While that scope doesn't have external adjustment turrets,,,
It does have that Bullet Drop Compensator (BDC) reticle.

Off of a bench I can hit a 1/2" spot at 50 yards pretty much every shot,,,
That was with a much lesser quality 3-9X32 scope.

So between now and next month's match I'll be at the range,,,
Dialing the Nikon scope in and testing the BDC accuracy.

All I need other than that is a bi-pod and a couple of shooting bags,,,
One of the shooters showed me a $40 bi-pod from Wal Mart,,,
It connects to the sling stud and seemed solid enough.

I balked at the price of shooting bags at Academy,,,
So I'll make a few bags out of Levi pant legs using aquarium gravel,,,
That should be good enough to get me started as an entry level competitor.

So I'm going to give it a go.

After seeing some of the shooters at this small match,,,
I know I'll never be one of the "Top-Dawgs" in this,,,
But I just might have found a new game to play.

P.S. Who knows, that "Retirement" rifle I've been researching,,,
Just might be one designed for this shooting game.

IMO, you have EXACTLY the right attitude to try this game. Way too much is made of the equipment- and not the shooter. You will do great, I predict.
Get your hold-overs for each of the ranges being shot; shown in the December course of fire. Write these down. Have a way to refer to them during a stage.

Now the equipment woes begin,,,

Now the equipment woes begin,,,
I've been reading articles on NRL22 matches,,,
And as always I'm getting into information overload.

I once heard a line in a TV show,,,
"You only need so much information to make a decision. Anything over that amount only causes confusion."

I think I'm in this morass of information overload.

First dilemma:
I Own two CZ-512 rifles,,,
The full size rifle and the carbine.

Should I use the rifle for possibly better accuracy,,,
Or the carbine for ease of maneuverability?

The Rifle has a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4-12x40 scope,,,
The Carbine has a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40 scope.

Or should I bite the bullet and buy a Tactical scope,,,
Like a Vortex Diamondback?

Aaaaargh!

Too Much Information.

I believe that I should just stay calm and go with my original notion,,,
I should use the CZ-512 Rifle with it's Nikon glass,,,
Because that's what I have at the moment.

Plenty of time to read up on NRL-22 matches and gear,,,
Plenty of time to spend money if I decide to.

scope

I struggled to get hits with the "extra dots " scope. They didn't correspond to any of the target distances. When I bit the bullet and got a Vortex Diamondback with the Christmas tree reticle, things went better for me. Since there are commonly two target distances (or more) per stage, I can consult my dope chart, and use the appropriate holdover hash mark for each distance, rather than dialing elevation to enable a center hold. Time saved allows me more time to get my old body into position. Some stages that have a lot of position changes, I just try to get 8 good shots rather than 10 hasty poor shots. Have fun.
