STEYR MANNLICHER .22 INTHA'BOX

Many years (decades) ago when I was a barefoot farm boy my favorite reading was Stoeger's Shooter's Bible and the page I always lingered on showed the elegant, full stocked Steyr .22 Rimfire. But at a price of $136. it was as unreachable as the moon. But time went by, my fortunes improved slightly and having just finished grad school I felt I deserved a reward. The long yearned for Austrian .22 would be a perfect gift for myself I figured, but calls to Stoeger disclosed that the rifle of my dreams was no longer in production. However, I was informed, there might still be one left in their distribution center. Turns out, there were actually five or six left and I could have my pick if I could get to their New Jersey warehouse. It was a long drive but worth the trip and I opened every box. They were all beautiful but one, with a lovely fiddleback pattern stock stood out above the rest. Which of course was my choice, along with both double and single triggers. Much more time has passed since then, with the rifle mainly remaining in the box. But time to time I like getting it out and remembering the old days.

WOW!!!! So that's what they look like brand new. One of those sold recently on Gunsinternational at 95% without the box for $3600.

Wow, that's a beauty to be sure. Looks to be similar to the Krico & Anschütz Stutzen of that same era.

SO, with 5 or 6 to choose from you only got ONE??? Didn't think about your old buddy here at RFC??? Now, you want to brag!!!! GEEZ, what a guy...........

You DESERVE IT.......Congrats on getting your dream fulfilled!!!

How long ago did you make this trip??

I also spend many hundreds of hours oogling the Shooters Bible and couldn't afford any more than looking. I alwa wanted the Mannlicher Schoenauer centerfire rifle. I still can't afford one and now have absolutely no "need" for one!!!

Zephyr

Steyr claims they will have a new model Zephyr out soon.

I don't get too excited about it. Believe it when I see it.

The old ones are classic.....too bad they don't shoot good.

I am jealous! I have 3 of these, the first one I purchased from a master cabinetmaker in the 1970's for $150, it is a DST. Then along the way I found two more one a DST and the other a single trigger which I prefer over the DST. Several spare mags and firing pins I got from Stoeger but IN THE BOX takes the cake!

I've seen photos of the "new" Zephyr, not at all attractive in my opinion but everyone's tastes are different.

You have a beautiful and elegant little "Custom Carbine" there!

Only a few people were in a position to buy one new and fewer yet had
their choice of 5 or 6 . . .

Still fewer kept them in such immaculate shape along with the box!

As one of the 'last' rifles, its interesting to note the serial number, as it gives
anecdotal evidence to loosely support the "Blue Book" claim that the total production was 3,913 rifles!

(Yours has the highest serial number I remember seeing --- never one in the
oft-repeated 4000 to 6000 range.)

Has anyone seen an engraved Zephyr which the paperwork seems to imply was
an option?

As your rifle has what looks like 'upgraded' wood and DST, does it also have
"Boehler HH" stamped on the right-hand side of the barrel,
just in front of the receiver?

Thanks for sharing a great looking and very interesting rifle!

Don

. . . just when we thought the Rem '37 Sporter post couldn't be topped . .
