The Viper 4-16 is a good scope for a 17hmr prairie dog gun. The 10yard dog is very rare and can take an extra couple seconds to find on 4x. The 16x is good enough for prairie dogs at 250 yards. You can go higher but youll already run into mirage issues with 16x.

For target shooting, you may want more magnification. The 16x is enough and the Viper is clear for plinking at 300 yards. Id want more for informal competition shooting.

Great scope especially for hunting. I use a Weaver GS 5-20 on my .17 and it is a perfect fit IMO.

Leupold VX6-3-18X 44mm Fire Dot.
Fire dot is only .25 moa so it's fine for target shooting; and for hunting the Fire Dot is simply awesome.
With 3X to 18X it covers most needs superbly.
Dot is at medium low setting.

Anschutz 1717 HD .17hmr.

Smooth
Beautiful rifle and set up. I agree with ST on the power range.

I have had quite a few on my 17's

3-9 weaver
2.5-10 Vortex PST
4-16 Diamondback
3-12 diamondback
4.5-27 athlon
3-18 vortex
3-18 swampfox (currently on my 17hmr)

I have found the 3-18 to be one of the most useful power ranges for hunting to target shooting for the 17hmr. I have been looking for the perfect optic under 500.00 () and I have settled on it needs to be a FFP, 3-18 scope with good glass, forgivable eyebox and a reticle that is fast on 3x but has a fine enough center or dot that at 18x it doesn't obscure the target.

If you have a Vortex 4-16 through it one there and run with that.

I do have one of those but not on a .17. The one on my .17 is the Varmint EB-X reticle. Unfortunately they are no longer being produced so they are pretty hard to come by. One of if not my all time favourite scopes. This one.

New to site and overall new to shooting. I have what is probably a stupid question for most but I will ask it anyways. I have just bought a new tikka and I happen to have a vortex viper 4-16x44 scope that Im thinking of mounting on it. I will be using the gun primarily for target and prairie dogs. I know the scope is overkill but is it just plain ridiculous to mount something like that on a .17? Any help would be great thanks.
306Tikka sir I would say that 90% of all my rifles have a 4-16x scope on them I have 5x 17hmrs and 3 of them have 4-16x and the other two have 6-24x bolted on top...so you are good to go. I like the 4-16x scopes the best for my hunting needs because at 4x you can follow most game and if and when I need a little more for that close up and personal touch I crank it up to where I need...and if shooting really long range at game or paper I can max it out if necessary.

So your not over scoped at all. These are most of my Weaver scope boxes I also have Leupold, Redfield, old Weavers, Bushnells, Simmons and had a Vortex at one time...and some cheapies. I fell in love with the reticles on my Weaver Classic V series and My Grand Slam scopes so I bought ton of them:

all of these are 4-16x or higher magnification.

for me it's the reticle that makes all the difference...when you find one that works for you and NOT one you have to make work...then your golden

My favorites are Ballistics X on the V-16s and V-24s and the Varmint EBX on the GS 4-16x and 5-20x. Like Nick7274 said they are not made any more. The GS 4-16x EBX and Dual X in the 5-20x are still around. Just so you know which reticle we are talking about...here are a few to look at:
https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forum...d.php?t=516808

Your has chosen a nice scope and you should be good with it...the 17hmr will allow you to shoot at longer ranges...if need be down the road you might want to look at a scope in 6-24x or higher.

I don't see a 16X scope as overkill for this caliber. I prefer 24 X and have that on both my 17's. I find the extra power nice for either bench shooting or little critters at long range.

My favorite power range is 4-20 or 6.5-20. I have Sightron to Simmons in that range. I also employee Mueller Eradicators and Target Dots on my 17s as well

I wish my 3 Sightron S-Tac 4-20x50 had illumination on just center Dot. Would be my perfect scope.

Tim "the tool man Taylor" says more power. I agree and have a 6X24 so I can see those tiny holes on paper at 100 yards. You can always lower the power but you can't increase it if you don't have it.

I just bought a NIB Burris Droptine 4.5-14x42 with AO from a guy on Armslist for $160 shipped. It has the mil-dot reticle but the parallax only goes down to 50 yards if that bothers you. He has another one available if anyone is looking for a good scope at a good price.
