One that has a wood stock, shoots considerably accurate, and not more than $400. Recommendation?

Thanks

Should be able to find a Marlin or Savage to meet your need. Savage has a reputation of producing some of the best accuracy with economical barrels. My buddy has a Marlin that shoots very well. If you could find a way to bump your budget to a $500 limit, you could buy a CZ Varmint under $500 and a friend of mine has one that is wicked accurate.

I agree, up your budget $100 or so and get a CZ. They're a great value for the $ and have great resale.

Def agree with CZ, you won't regret it. My colleague has one and it's just top-notch for that type of money. I am no expert by any means though, just an enthusiast.

Henry makes a nice 17 HMR lever in the $450 range as well. Iíve got a CZ in 17 - itís fantastic, but I bet the Henry would be way more fun.

Whenever possible, I try to get SS rifles with laminate stock due to Iowa's summer
time humidity. Blued rifles need constant attention to prevent rust.

I have a now old Marlin 17VS which can shoot better than me. The only time I
used it for groups it got 1/4-3/8" @ 75 yards. That model has been replaced with
the XT-17VSL with MSRP of $437.58 but with a little shopping can be had for less
than $400:

Savage B17 G meets all your criteria. Mine was $390.00 from Classic Firearms and is amazingly accurate at 100 yards.
