My First and Last Try at Knife Making

I love knives but never thought about making one until an old boy showed me how to do pressure flaking. He provided the blank and tools and sat down with me and about an hour later had this blade formed.

Took an old deer shed and cut off a piece and formed it up for the handle and then wrapped the joint with some rawhide and wiped her down with tung oil.

It's sharp!

Thanks Sail Design. It'd make a good skinner and stabber. Wouldn't want to drop it or try prying with it!

That doesn't help ANY knife....

Don't ask why I know that.

Good job! Flint knapping is not that easy. I've done a couple. Yours looks good! You may have a knack for this.

Brass or bronze Steve. 1930's-40's vintage I'd guess. It's articulated, something handed down in our family...just a weirdo objet d'art in my office museum of unnatural history

Where would man be if we be if we didn't try to try new things? The definition of culture is when we put our hands to create something from nature.

Thanks guys I appreciate the comments. Wayne Sheldon is the knapper who taught me. He and his son Bill do some really nice work. They're out of the Prichett Co/Felt OK area.

The big trick was starting off with a uniform preformed slice of rough. Then it was just a copper nail embedded in a piece of dowel. Put a piece of thick leather on the knee and then two passes pressing down on both edges. Coarse pass flaking off big chips, and then a fine pass making little chips

I've got more blades and I was thinking about using antelope horn handles as I've got lots but dang that stuff stinks cutting/working it. Bone is bad enough but hair just turns my stomach.

Frank

If you can't make it, fake it!

Here you go Hushkaboom...it's got a little Klingon Bat'leth thing going on

If you've ever tried to work antelope horn it's got a bony core with keratin sheath. Any cutting/grinding/polishing operations smell like Al the Infidel's gym socks...

HOO EEE, POWERFUL!!

LtCrunch, that is a great-looking knife.
