I've had this old Simmons 4-12x40AO since my first 10-22 back in 2000. Nothing special by any means, just a decent low end Philippines made Simmons that set me on the path to an appreciation for an adjustable objective on a rimfire. Before I was on forums or knew anything at all about upgrading a trigger, and no doubt when you could buy a 500 box of whatever flavor bulk for $7.95 at walmart. Sitting out on the counter, not in a locked case.

I bought it for a stainless carbine my dad bought for me, moved it to a Marlin 336 later on for a while, and its sat in the closet for the past few years. Never did get rid of it, maybe for some sentimental purpose, or maybe because I just kind of liked it. Regardless, I mounted it on a 300 Win Mag this weekend so I could shoot it before I bought an actual scope for that rifle, and it took basically 5rds to kill the old Simmons.

R.I.P. Prohunter, you have officially become an excuse to buy another scope.

What you have proven is that they are GREAT scopes for a rimfire. You just abused it with recoil. If it was still on the 10/22 it would still be going strong.

Warranty may still be good. Send it in with $10 for return shipping and you may get a new model replacement for use on your next rimfire.

Some people laugh at me for it (at first anyway), but my 1998-vintage 880SQ is wearing a 1998-vintage Simmons Deer Hunter 3-9x32mm in Tasco rimfire rings. That set-up has killed a semi-trailer worth of squirrels since '98, so I'm hesitant to mess with anything that's working that well.

While I advise having the best equipment you can reasonably afford, great equipment won't buy you the skills.

It was that or the old 22Mag AO up on the shelf beside it. Probably should have held off and waited a week.

While I have some better quality scopes set aside, I love the simmons scopes made in the Philippines for my rimfires. I'll save the weaver classic for something like a 300 win mag

Did that with a POS BSA 4-16 mil-dot (which I bought back then to displace that Simmons). It sat with a broken turret for 3yrs, and I threw it in the mail with $10 and got a new one a few months later. Gave that to one of my redneck uncles.

Simmons took a huge dump around 05-06 when the serial numbers started beginning with 5XXXXX and the word China replaced Philippines or Korea.

The last Simmons scopes that I bought were these 3 at a steal in 2009, and sold them for $70 each on Ebay.

Pretty sure I passed on that deal myself while waiting for that 4-12 SMART reticle to drop under $100. Just because I wanted the goofy reticle. And when it finally did, I think I... A. was hard up for cash and.. B. Didn't have a gun to put it on at the time. I'd buy one today just on principle.

The other one was the Simmons ATV scope. I remember that having a small cult following around the time I first got on this forum and the Mueller APV was all the rage in a budget scope. And then I made both my cousin and brother in law buy one so I could shoot them.

Those Philippines Simmons were all sharp looking streamlined bodies too. I always loved how the objective bell looked on them (as if that was a thing).

I bought two at the time. Gave one to a buddy; still have one.
