Colt Woodsman Match Target "single shot?"

Howdy

Am posing a question for a friend of mine who has a problem with a really nice 3rd issue Match Target.

Magazine full of .22 shells.
Insert magazine until it locks.
Pull back slide and release. (So far, so good)

Pull trigger.
Bam!

Slide locks back and magazine still has 9 more rounds!!

Release slide.
Shell goes into battery.
BAM!!................same deal.....
Slide locks back and still has 8 more rounds.

My friend used 3 different magazines------------same results.
My friend used like 4 different brands of .22 long rifle shells.....same results.
Friend lets two other friends shoot the pistol.............same results.

No matter what you do, the slide locks back after firing one round in spite of magazine having more rounds.

** He held down the slide release while firing and it zipped all 10 rounds, but who wants to hold down the slide release to get it to properly work??

He called Colt. They do not work on .22 Woodmans any more. BUMMER!!

Obviously, we ruled out ammo, human operation, and magazines.

This may be a gunsmith problem................. Anyone have any good ideas as to what the problem is?

THANKING you in advance, Bo

The slide stop has a spring that holds it down until the magazine follower button pushes it up to catch the slide after the final round is fired. I suspect that spring is missing, not installed correctly or somehow deformed.

In the IPB, it's part number 44.

I agree with doubs43.
The Slide Stop Spring is installed incorrectly. Instead of holding the Slide Stop down and away the Spring is actually pushing the Slide Stop up to a capture position.
Go to Bob Rayburn's most excellent website at: www.colt22.com
click "Repairs" top left
scroll down to Slide Stop, click it
Review the tutorial specific to the subject at hand.

If you own a Woodsman and do not have Rayburn's little red manual you, IMO, are missing out on something special. Handy, well-written and lots of valuable information.

WOW..........THANKS SO MUCH!!! Fellers, you are the best.

My friend is following this thread and he is going to find that spring. He is very appreciative of your help and advice.

After reading your responses and having done minor 'smithing in the past, it makes good sense. It would not surprise me if that spring was missing.

THANKS and have a great day, Bo in Western NC

If the Slide Stop Spring is missing, the during live fire capture becomes arbitrary because the Slide Stop bounces but not necessarily accomplishing a captures of the Slide Notch except after the last shot is fired because the magazine Follower Stud generates the actual up/capture force.

When the Spring is incorrectly installed with the springs leg above the Mounting Screw the Slide's capture is every shot because the Slide Stop is actually riding on the bottom of the Slide with pressure.

A simple test, push the Slide Stop down without the magazine in place and watch it incorrectly rise.
The Slide Stop Spring is designed to hold the Slide Stop Assembly down and away.

Tom Platt
