Time to re-run a link to this article from American Rifleman magazine, about the design and manufacture of .22 rimfire. Once you read it, you're amazed that rimfire can work anywhere near as well as it does.

But, put 33 grain Remington premier to the test and it's noticeably better, usually close to or a little under an inch at 50 yards. Stock rifle except for the trigger spring. YMMV but that's my experience. Off a bench with sandbags.
I dont know what is going on with Ruger these days. They make thier barrels now and that was supposed to eliminate the wild fluctuation in performance on guns like the 77/xx. It seems to be same-old same-old . From anyone else, I get a lot better from my 22mags. Ruger probably did not help the WSM get a foot hold either.

Edit: I just though my 22mag in Ruger American is a great shooter. I can cut those 77/22 groups in 1/2 without breaking a sweat. I honestly dont know what is going on with ruger. The same thing with the mini30. I got one and was lucky to hit the barn from inside! The MkI,II,III,IV pistols shoot great. The No1, another crap shoot.

For every braggin group or hit Ive made, in the field or competition, Ive got more than too many that are not so good.
Me, the gun, the ammo, the conditions or what? These games are not lab tests, they cant be, too many variables. And besides, I never shoot in a lab, what would be the point. Well, ok, I'll concede that the lab shooting would show I do, or dont know what Im doing, eliminate the variable conditions, maybe even show my 'gun(s)' are sub-standard. Then what? It will always come down to how well I can shoot my gun in the conditions of the day. Out of it all finding a lot of ammo that can do as well as my needs is the only thing left.
Thanx Jaia! And kudos for inviting any and everyone to join in the fun and post their 50 at 200, though few have. As has often been said, 'paper dont lie'.

Crankster, I had an evil thought on the drive home from the range this morning.

One that would ruin all discussions of 22wmr accuracy for everyone.

Contact the manufacturers, and ask them straight out...

What is the accepted accuracy for the 22wmr produced at your factory?

Can you imagine the horror of actually finding out that it's 2 moa at 50 yards.

I'd be happy to link the contact page for each of the different brands.
Do you think anyone would really be interested in the facts?

Naw... that'd ruin any further accuracy threads, wouldn't it?

Let's see here...2 moa at 50 yards, that's an inch of spread.
So at 100 yards you have to multiply by 3 so expect 3 inches of spread.
Then at 200 yards, x 3 again expect 9 inches of spread.

Hey! Wait... that's what I got in the 50 at 200!

AAAAAARRRRGGGHH..... I had an even more horrible thought.

Contact the rifle manufacturers and ask them what they guarantee for 22wmr accuracy?

Oh, the horror...the horror.....

Dang, it got quiet around here all of a sudden.... I can hear the crickets.

I suspect that info is on the 'need to know' basis and above our pay grade.....

As already said, 22wmr from the box must be accepted for what its.. It could use some quality control for sure, but testing any rnd @ its max effective range & looking to get 1moa or better is setting your standards awfully high IMO! My best hand loads from a accurate bolt 223 will not print 1" groups at 200yrds consistently..

You do understand 1 moa at 200 yards is 2"

Ofcourse! Will your hunting centerfire rig shoot 1moa @ 200 consistently in real word situations? Mine wont! I do have a custom 243 mag (self designed chambering) that will! But again its comfortable @ that range & capable of much further.

The 22mag from the box has case lengths that vary by 0.005 & sometimes more!
Keep in mind that the bullets can & do vary by 1gr on a 6.3-7gr powder charge (depending on ammo)..
The bullets are also crimped in place! I don't believe the pressure could possibly ever be consistent enough for extreme accuracy! Do you?

Lotsa things get claimed on the internet.

"Sub-moa all day long, if I do my part" has become a standing joke at the local range.

I now require proof of 22wmr accuracy, including chronographed mv's.

At the very least I'd want to see the target results posted in the local club's witnessed rimfire competition.

Think that'll happen any time soon, using the 22wmr?

Cynical and distrustful? Me? Oh yeah.

22 mag accuracy..........

Sounds to me like the problem lies with either the rifle or the shooter. I have an original Winchester Low Wall that I built into a custom sporter about 35 years ago that I chambered for .22 mag. It will consistently hold a 1/2 MOA group (or smaller) IF I do my part! And that is pretty much with any 22 mag cartridge that will load into the chamber! The ballistic tip ammo does a bit better than the round nose or hollow point but the difference is not great. I don't think the manufacturers are turning out junk ammo at all!

Dang it A51....don't do that!
I've got nothing against a well written bit of satire,
but that last line was so over the top
I snarfed my coffee all over my monitor!

Bloody comedian making me waste my valuable coffee.

Satire?

Satire, what satire? I didn't see any satire! By the way, hot coffee makes a good nose and sinus flush! But, you already found that out! Anyone that is not happy with their 22 mag ammo can send it to me free of charge. Don't say I didn't try to help!

Maybe it's just me but I don't understand all the 22 wmr bashing. It's never ending with some members who seem very disgruntled with this caliber. There are plenty of other calibers out there, so why not pick something you like and be happy. My 22 wmr rifle shoots just fine and I'm very happy with it, and it's as accurate as I need it to be.
