Blueberries can be grown at home on tall bushes! I had no idea until several years ago. I had a vegetable garden for many years including a raspberry patch that produced some fine hootch from several berry varieties IMA. I digress. Wild Yooper blueberries are the best to eat as is IMO but my joints no longer permit stooping, kneeling and the like anymore. All those years I coulda been enjoying my very own blueberry pies. sigh!

Last time I stoped at the Michigan Visitors Center, I94 Indiana into Michigan, they gave jars of blueberry jam, and told us to comeback in the spring to get free fresh blueberries.. I love Michigan!

We have 'pick your own" blueberry patches all over the place around here (on non-stoop bushes). None in Yooperdom?!

You might have to fight a bear or two for the best ones, but that's all part of the experience.

Ironically enough - the tall ones are called "High bush" varieties and short ones are called "Low bush" varieties....

Did you know that the part of the brain responsible for "Doing stuff" isn't really connected to the part of the brain for "Explain stuff".... That's why you frequently run into fantastic doers who work magic yet the explanations make no sense what-so-ever... Fairy, mysticism, pseudo-science and whatnot.... And you run into explainers who often can't actually do the things they teach others....

PO Ackley fell into the 2nd group... If you ever get one of the rifles he made himself or a set of his dies - they are fairly rough, crude, and not particularly appealing... His rifles don't really shoot that well either.... But his writing sparked a revolution in wildcat cartridges and custom rifles that were far and away better than anything he ever actually made himself.

I have 5 different apple trees that were sold to me as dwarfs when the place was being sold. All were 23-25' tall 3-4 yrs ago until I gave em all a 10-12' haircut and thinning.

Until a few years ago I never knew carbon rings could form in some 22s.

Blueberry bushes grew wild all over my property in NE Pa. The problem is you have to net them when they have fruit as the birds will strip them clean in a nanosecond if you don't.

As a kid, I would visit my Aunt and Uncle in Carbondale PA. They had wild blueberry bushes all over the place . Had to bend over to pick them. Used to fill up coffee cans with them.

Just to let you know you need two different varieties for pollination, not just two plants.

If you want them to produce prolifically you have to fertilize them three times early in the season at one month intervals starting in mid January down here in the South or as soon as the ground thaws elsewhere. Best organic fertilizer is Cotton Seed Meal but I don't suppose thats available everywhere. Ask your local Extension Office what they have in your neck of the woods.

I had six of the tall bushes at one of the homes I owned. Once they started to produce I could pick about 5 pounds a day, and that lasted about 6 weeks. If I didn't pick them the birds would poop purple all over my house and cars. YUK. I gave most of them away but man they were good. I'd eat them until I pooped purple as well.
