4.5" Barrel Accuracy @ 50?

Log in to see fewer ads
Hello,

I'm trying to figure out if my situation is normal or if I should be looking somewhere. I've got a 4.5" Pike Arms barrel and a 4.5" chopped 10/22 barrel that I'm trying to determine their base accuracy.

I have them setup in Brownells receivers in PMACA chassis with Gemtech Alpine suppressor.

My first outing was at 25 yards and I was using a Vortex Diamondback tactical 6-24 scope with Ruger bolt and BX trigger. I was not getting consistent grouping with Aguila standard velocity ammo, Wolf Match Target, or Federal High Velocity.

I thought it was due to something funky with the scope or suppressor so I took everything apart and cleaned it and reassembled with a Athlon Midas TAC scope. I took it to 50 yards and was basically getting shotgun patterns.

I took everything back apart and cleaned it and did some JB bore bright paste in the bores. I swapped in my Volquartsen CNC bolt and trigger group and kept the Athlon Midas TAC scope on it and took it back out today at 50 yards.

With a lead sled rest (every other test was from bipod and bags) I'm still getting 3" inch groups with the same ammo. It just doesn't seem consistent at all.

Is there something going on with the ammo with only 4.5" barrels and just not stabilizing? Any other ideas to look for?

I'm sending both barrels to Randy @ CPC to get reworked but I don't want to waste my time or money if I can't expect any reasonable accuracy at 25-50 yards.

Thanks

You’re shooting a hand gun. I doubt CPC can make it much more accurate.

Hey don't give up. Try better ammo. Maybe some centerX or Eley black box. Don't know how many rounds you put through before cleaning but some do better dirty. Also you may want to try changing only one or two things at a time. There are so many small changes that can make a huge difference. Good luck

Right its a 4.5" experiment on my dime, no charge...
I seen short Hi Standard pistol barrels do real good so a little experiment does not hurt...
The 4.5" Ruger 10/22 barrel I gave you was scrap, the first 8 or 9 inches were normal than it opened up so cutting it was no loss.... Its a normal Ruger carbine barrel...
A little setback, a little chant and chicken blood and see what voodoo can doo dooo...

So at 25 yards the Pike Arms barrel delivered .897" / 1.561" / .600" with Aguila 40gr, at 50 yards it netted 3.545" / 2.945" / 1.544" / .992" / 1.495".

The Ruger barrel from Randy without working it over gave me 1.480" / 1.436" / 1.343" at 25 yards and 4.441"/ 2.281" at 50 yards with the same Aguila ammo.

I sent the barrels off to Randy today for rework, I'll retest after they get back. The whole thing will be written up on RangeHot.com.

Hehaa...No one here is surprised that the aftermarket barrel is slightly more accurate than a Ruger carbine barrel... Normal here at RFC....

Rather than spend more money on the ersatz barrels, I would go KIDD pistol barrels, although they are the bull type.

I have one in ss 6" and it is very accurate with a Vortex red dot, but I plan to temporarily scope it to determine its full potential.

4.5" Barrel Accuracy @ 5

My High Standard 6&1/4 inch barrel, by Krieger, shoots very well, purchased from Randy at CPC, a few years ago. It goes on my vintage Victor, 22LR pistol, slab sided, stainless, push button barrel, with Ultra Dot sight. I am really glad I purchased this barrel, as they are really high priced today.

I interesting article. Would be interesting to see the mechanical potential of the set up in an indoor range.

I like that he used better ammo in the final testing.

Round 3 is on....
Go to http://youtu.be/p30P5yFHkCw

Oddest thing I ever seen... I will be reworking a bull barrel I made in the 1990's... I did not know this until seeing the YouTube video... I was in charge of making 10/22 bull barrels when I worked at Wilson Arms Co... Some were marked Midway, some CPC (me) and 2 others, all the same barrels...
Rifle is shooting very well at 1/2" groups so even I do not know if I can improve on my own work?
