NAME (Doc 25), AGE(optional):
LOCATION: Saskatchewan
GUN: anschutz 1415
GUN SETUP: __x_Scope ___Iron sights ___Sling

INDIV TGTS SCORES: 93, 81, 93 1x, 85, 83 1x
NOTES, started with the 93 no clue what happended on target 2, came back and lost it again?

was feeling pretty solid with the first target, second couldn't hit anything, third was solid again. Last two having harder time holding steady. Hopefully I can keep the 90's and stop some of the random shots.
Thanks for running this shoot! Gives me something to focus on.

Those scores are are solid, even with a miss @ 50 yds. Yes, there is room for improvement, but they are solid none-the-less.

Welcome to the match!

Was raining when I shot this today, covered benches so no worries there. No wind to speak of and temps in the upper 50's. Pretty chilly for this time of year!

Game 7 of the Stanley Cup tonight.

Go Blues. (Not really a Blues fan, I just don't want Boston to win.)

Oh man target 4. Had a miss. Lapse of concentration and pushed it bad.
A 480 has been a goal and shot plenty good to get that but that miss killed it.
Oh well, there’s always next time.

I went to the range Saturday morning with the intention of getting a couple of sets of targets done, but....

During some quick bench shots to check for a cold-bore flyer issue I discovered I was getting vertical stringing of an inch and a half at 50 yards. Five near-perfect off-hand shots at 25 yards put shots in the X-ring and the 7 ring and everywhere in between!

I went over to the silhouette range and benched it at 100 meters and was getting 2.5" groups too. Un-cool.

Got it home and gave it a good scrub with a brass brush, something I usually don't do. Went back out the next morning and with almost identical weather conditions I shot groups at 100m again. After about 15 shots I was back down to 1.5" groups, about what it normally does with SK Standard Plus.

I honestly had not given this rifle a good scrubbing for at least six months, maybe more. Now I wonder if I would have gotten any more hits at the state match a few weeks ago, or the Louisiana state match the month before that, or the CBC match the month before that...

Moral of the story: Even if you only shoot off-hand it's not a bad idea to bench your rifle every once in a while just to make sure everything is as it should be.

I agree acorneau. Always best to double check things. My normal routine is shoot a couple groups from the bench before each time I shoot off hand. Especially since I clean every time. It gives me opportunity to check the gun plus get lube/foul the bore.

For sure !
My first bull is almost always a sight check off the bench
I have found too many times the scope was loose, sights knocked around, bore dirty enough to start to affect groups, etc etc,
All no good even in O/H. This game is tough enough without making it tougher on myself by just being sloppy with maintenance…
Cheers
Bob

You've inspired me. For my June trip to the range, I didn't really clean when I returned. I just ran a dry boresnake through each barrel.

We'll see if this helps my scores.

Of course, the barrels aren't my problem. I shot an irons target and a scoped target a week ago, and several times on each target I essential threw a shot away by continuing the press even though I knew I wasn't near the center. It's as if I lack the concentration to remember what I'm doing.

EDIT - Using a dirty rifle held no magic for me

I agree w/ all the previous - I shoot 4 or 5 rounds at a 3" shoot-n-see on my first target to avoid surprises.

Hey zukiphile - what is that iron sight rifle you are using?
