22 Mag ideal barrel length

I have a 77/22 mag all weather and was wondering if the extra barrel length is really doing any good.
Does anyone have any data on the ideal barrel length for the 22 mag?
Thank you,
Eliot

Thanks Alum,
Do you know if performance (velocity) actually starts dropping off after 20"?

I don't have a chart memorized, but I'd imagine it's a bit shorter than 20". Personally, I like a 24" barrel for balance.

My Marlins are all 22". Seem to shoot pretty accurate.

I've used 21.5, 18.5 and 16.5 inch barrels.
All did as well as the ammo quality allowed.
For hunting with a scope, barrel length makes little difference.
With open sights I want more barrel length.

Id say 20 and 1/2 is optimum. Like my CZ455 WMR.

Read the mini magnum thread

We talked about this a few years back. I had a marlin cut back to 16.25 inch and I like it. But next to the my 77/22 it's actually no shorter due to action and stock length. I wouldn't cut a 77/22. You'll just lose value. I probably increased value on my marlin as it's a one of a kind so to speak. It was cheap to begin with at around $200 and there are a lot of Marlin's out there.
