Holiday rolling up next week. Folks often get it confused with something else.

Go ahead and enjoy the day off from work, the family BBQ, and take advantage of the sales on what has become the semi-official beginning of summer as there is no shame in that .... but don't forget what it's about. But, in the words of Patton, also remember "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived."

One of my dad’s younger brothers was killed in Belgium in
January of 1945. Sniper got him. Before the “ Battle of
the Bulge”, he was an armourer on
an anti-aircraft crew. The type mounted on a half-track.
There’s a scene in the movie “Patton” where Patton tells
one of his generals to cannibalize the anti-aircraft units and
make riflemen out of them. He was 22 years old.
He was buried in Belgium. In 1957, he and many other American
soldiers killed in Europe were disinterred and their remains brought
back to the US. My uncle that I never knew was laid to rest in the
national cemetery in Salisbury NC.
Freedom isn’t free. It comes at a great cost.
