First, you need to keep in mind that the "average" group size many people talk about is really their best group. We learn to read with a grain of salt. Now, the idea of the plate to stabilize the forend is a good one. You might also get a rest (Caldwell is one) that has adjustable side plates so you can pinch the bag snuggly against your stock. You'll need a narrow #1 bag for this to be successful. Sinclair sells them. Good luck.
