pictures on stocks

In memory of my grandfather, I would like to put his picture on a stock. I am doing a picture transfer, rather than etching. The process is easy enough to do as I have done a test but have any of you done this? If so are there any pitfalls to avoid? I am presuming a lacquer finish will keep it from rubbing off, but am testing that on one of my test prints now. This will not be a wall hanger, but will be used numerous times a year. Also, I have read the stickys but have not found what I am looking for, if it is even possible. I am looking to make the grip stand out in contrast. Black most likely, but is there a way to do this without re-stippling the grip? Stock is not fully prepped yet, but here is a pic of the grip
