Fire ants might reduce the tick population in Texas and Oklahoma but it's not working in Florida. In the 12 years we've lived here I haven't kept track how many ticks we've removed but I'm sure my wife and I passed 1,000 a while back. Our property is largely ungroomed and if we go outside, we expect a few ticks.

About half of those we find are the tiny nymph stage. I need a strong magnifier so I can tell a tiny tick from a small scab. It's very easy to miss one.

There are lots of clever and entertaining ways to get them off but I agree with the CDC recommendation, which is grab them with tweezers and pull.

It's not all bad. Tick check can be one of the best parts of the day,
