Leave it so its snug against the wood, not necessarily tight and adding a lot of pressure. I'd want to make sure you've got good contact along the receiver too.

Thanks fellas! I did a number of refinishing jobs this year and it felt good just to focus on the basics and keep working on developing a better finishing method. Practice makes perfect.

Thanks all!

Pipestone the finish is spar urethane topped off with Waterlox, plus I tinted the initial few coats of finish to warm up the color. Brushed and buffed on by hand.
