I would try some grease on the lug and slot first before filing the slot, and line the lug and action up , don't place the back of the action down first and try and pivot the lug in at an angle.

Guy just sitting here on the outside looking in, weakening the spring might help by taking upward pressure off the follower, but its probably the angle of the follower that is causing your problems....

X is at the end of the serial number, the rifle is right hand bolt with a left hand aftermarket stock so not the original stock, I shoot left handed but I am right...

I have one of the laminate stocks for a 1710 the same as Andyd and it is cut straight.

It could be one of these you have I see they are cut straight....
