I use hoppes #9 gun grease on bore and exterior. It stinks but works. Come back yrs later and everything it touches will stay rust free and perfect. It also creeps into nooks and crannies over time...

For $10 or whatever the price is now, a Patchworm works way better than the home made ones. It has caliber specific slugs that the patch rides over and keeps it tight and symetrical around the bore.
