That screw holds in the rear striker and spring in the striker sleeve. It's called the striker sleeve screw. My 81 uses the same screw.

Mine shoots very well with regular ammunition. Mine requires a full and quick pull of the bolt to reliably eject the spent brass, which can cause premature breakage of the somewhat fragile bolt...

Nobody really answered the question as to why it is there. I think the rifle was designed to resemble an M-1 Carbine.
My sleeper has the band clearanced inside so the band does not touch the barrel....
